Has anyone had any issues with OBD scanners playing up?

I have an autel maxiscan ms300 that I bought a while ago to clear a misfire fault after a coilpack went, but I went to use it yesterday after the EML appeared on the drive home, and it wouldn't power up. I connected it to my mate's 04 plate Fiesta and it turned on straight away.

I read something about after-market headunits causing an issue, so I pulled that out and it worked. I managed to get the codes off (P0036 and P0136) and read something from 8-bit on here saying he just cleared these and they didn't come back. Thought I'd give that a try and look into it further if the EML returned after a bit of driving, rather than just replacing the Lambda sensor straight away. So I went back to the car, connected the scanner, but all I'd get is 'link error.' I tried this three times until the screen suddenly went off. Now I can't get the scanner to power up in my car , though it works fine on others.

Has anyone got any advice? I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, but it hasn't made a difference.

Going to a friendly local garage I know tomorrow to see if theirs works. It'd be nice to have one of my own I can use though.

Are there any recommended, tried and tested scanners that work particularly well with Mk1 Leons? The connection felt loose even when it did work, especially when compared to the two Fords I tried it on.

hi i got a pro code reader vagt55 for vw audi seat skoda £64.94 from gendan automotive products. it works good on my lcr 2003

Haven't got a laptop. Isn't vagcom £100s as well?

You can get VCDS-lite and there are cheap full vcds leads knocking about on ebay etc

I have a basic handheld OBD reader as well but VCDS has so much more to offer.

Irrelevant if you don't have a laptop though, sorry.

I have been using a MaxiScan VAG405 for the past three years. Has been working faultlessly but not as good as laptop/PC based application.

Thanks for the replies.

Roohul and dazescort - what are the connections like on yours? Even when mine was working the lead felt quite wobbly when connected to the OBD port.
It was hard to tell whether it was plugged in properly and moved about a lot.

Seemed solid when I tried it on the Focus and Fiesta though.

my code reader t55 it fit ok in obd port. i have used it about 6 times had fault with radio it gave a code for aerial so got new aerial and base from seat £20.58 works good stays in tune

If you only want to read codes then Torque app for android (may be available for other devices) and a bluetooth ODB dongle will do the trick. I think the dongles are about £12 and when I registered torque is was about £3

I second torque app with a Bluetooth adaptor. Works well clears codes even on the magneti marelli ecu on my 1.6sx

Bluetooth adaptor and Torque Pro look good. Which adaptor have people gone for? There's a few on Amazon, but some say they don't work with Android 4 or above.

Bump.

Can anyone advise what adaptor they're using please? I've got a HTC phone running
Android 4.2.2, so would need one that works with that.
