Car had first year service today after 6k miles. I checked the oil after a good run down the motor way and about 30miles of driving. The oil colour is not gold looking like I'd expect. Its not black or anything. Just not that clean looking. Rub it on a rag and its dirty.

The was evidence of oil around the filler and the guy had even left the top from a bottle of oil under the bonnet , luckily it didn't dent the bonnet or get jammed anywhere.

I'm wondering if its mixed with older oil that was till in system of if it maybe just darkens up quicker??

Engine oil that comes out the same colour as it went in isn't doing any cleaning.

The byproducts from combustion (carbon/soot) are suspended in the oil so they don't come into contact with the metal surfaces inside an engine.

If the oil comes out clean then the carbon/soot is still inside the engine/sump, if the oil comes out dark/black then the carbon is coming out with the oil - thus a clean engine inside. :)

The dispersants/detergents in engine oil carry the carbon/soot to the oil filter where it gets trapped and filtered.

I have found on all Diesels engines I have owned the new oil turns black fairly quickly, also with oil changed nowa days most garages don't flush the engine out with flushing oil so you stll get a residue of old oil contaminating the new.

Diesel engine will never give you clear oil even after its started with new oil in, simply down to the fact that it is a very high combustion engine so carbon deposits get in the engine and in the oil, does not affect the quality of the oil at all providing you change the oil as and when needed.

Mines booked in next week. I'll let you know but i usually find it stays clean for a few weeks in all other cars i've owned. Doesn't give you great confidence does it, leaving the cap in the engine bay. How much was your first sevice btw. Mines just on 5.5k after a year!

I'm pretty sure he did change it as there was no room for it just to be topped up. I'm going to check the oil again at lunch as the car has sat for about 4hrs now since it was last run. I really expected it to be nice clean oil on the stick. I even spoke to the guy after it about what oil he used and what I had been using for top ups.

The service was £98. That's including a 1yr inspection service. He used Quantum Synta gold 10w40 fully synthetic 505 spec.

You would expect the oil to be clean  Quoted £135 and i have no confidence in them or any other localish dealer, still undecided to cancel and take to local garage. Just would like the dealer stamp!

Let us know what the oils like later.

I just had my 10k service last week and tbh my oil is not all that clean , also had my car 13 weeks done 6,000 miles ! and i dont use it for work

I pesonaly think 10k miles is too long for an oil change , i will be doing mine every 6 months regardless of mileage , for the sake of the price of an oil filter , oil and maybe the ocasional plug and washer its a no brainer , oil should stay cleaner that way.

I checked it again at lunch. Like you say, its not that clean but its definitely not black or old looking. I'm wondering if that oil is greeny brown to start with.

There's a smell of petrol/diesel through the oil though when I wiped it on the rag?? That normal?? Can you check yours?? The car was driven about 3 miles to work and was parked up. It barely got off the cold on the temp gauge. I'm thinking it could be some engine flush residue I'm smelling?? Anyone know what they smell like??

The cars going great and MPG is actually slightly better after the service.
