If you have the 150bhp version they dont burn oil.

The 184 cuna engine will at some point start burning oil and at low mileage, 50000 onwards.

The oil control rings are responsible for this. They are specced to be on the loose side and they don't seal as older engines from the VW range do. Its said to be a emission control thing.

VW state its normal to burn up to 1000ml per 1000 miles.

Common complaint and well documented on the forum.
They both have the same piston rings!

5W 30 will be fine although VW have now changed to 5w 40 apparently. Don't know why.
Please share your source for VAG changing 507 spec to 5w40?
Or is that a typo?
507 was 5w30 and later changed to 0w30.

The last time we were using 5w40s it was 505/505 01 spec for the non long life service regime PD engines.

We use Shell Helix Ultra in our pumps in the workshop, with the following specs/grades:

504/507 - 0w30s
508/509 - 0w20s

There was a useful thread on EA288 oil consumption - but now its no longer found?
Any ideas where it went?

EA288 184hp 2.0 Diesel - Oil Burning - your findings?

5W40 is the oil I was given the last time I bought it, which was a few months ago. Prior to that I was given 0W30 and originally 5W30. It was 5W30 for years, I didn't question when they changed to 0W30 although I did think it was an odd change. When they handed my the 5W40 the last time I was in I asked what was going on? Guy said they'd realised they were getting too much wear, especially on older engines, with the 0W40 so they'd changed to 5W40. All of this was from Livingston Seat in Udingston. That's all I can tell you.

Less bhp less torque. Carn't be driven as hard.
By that logic any remapped TDI is doomed
Oil control rings aren't seeing cylinder pressures.

They are a different design of oil control rings with lots of little holes (used by many other manufactures) - rather than the older type using a wavey center spring with relatively huge holes - for oil to drain back to the sump.
These tiny oil drain holes can get blocked (especially with the ridiculous extended oil drain intervals) - meaning the oil scraper rings can't get rid of the oil they are 'scraping'

The 150 & 184 do have different turbos - so if there really are more oil consumptions issues with the 184 then maybe this different turbo is to blame?

UPDATE: my oil light has come on roughly 400 miles after topup, it was topped up to between 3/4 and 1/2. Ive been driving it and monitoring and this consumption seems alarming, will get it checked out. If anyone has any suggestions on what i can check at home myself before i get it checked for pistons rings, please let me know.

The car itself is driving fine, dpf regens are around 60-80 miles aswell

So you're saying you did 400 miles from between 0.50 - 0.75L of oil? (it takes 1L to go from min to max)
That would be 1.25 - 1.8L/1000miles! which compared to the chart I posted previously is not good.

I would do an accurate test - fill the oil to the full mark with the car on level ground and note the millage, then drive normally, and note the millage driven if/when the oil light comes on again.

If my dipstick is at 1/2 it doesn't take much to get to 1.4 and then the oil light comes on. As @SuperV8 says, fill it to full and monitor the mileage until the light comes on. Very to know how much oil you use when you say it was filled between 1/2 and 3/4.

From my own experience, I've had oil leaks identified and fixed due to:

  • Leaking rocker cover - it's made of plastic and will fail over time
  • Leaking oil filter housing/oil cooler - it's made of plastic and the the rubber seals fail over time
Basically, see if you can get a good look around the engine. Remove the undertray and see if there are any obvious signs of oil leaks. If you are happy there are no physical leaks, then it could be internal.

My car was doing DPF regens every 120 miles or so if doing local short routes and 160 miles on motorway trips. It's on 152,000 miles and now it's drppped to about 60-80 miles so it might be getting tired. What sort of mileage is your car on?

I'm nearly at 150k miles and also noticed frequent regens around a similar mileage to yours! Never had a DPF light come on. I do notice it seems to gradually fill up then suddenly spike - and consequently carry out a regen.

Regarding oil leaks - I've noticed my front crank seal is leaking a little - so will be changed at my next timing belt change!

Yeah - more recently I've had the gradual fill up then sudden spike and regen. I have read that the actual DPF sensor can get a bit clogged and cause erroneous signals and trigger a premature regen. I've actually got a new sensor so might fit it and see. Or the DPF is just getting tired. I've got a long drive to Wales at the weekend, so it will have time to do some decent motorway miles and see what it does.

Oils leaks seem to have many origins on these cars!

The seals on the filter housing should be replaced every time the filter is changed. Making critical parts out of plastic, that's another problem altogether!

I wasn't talking about the seals where the filter goes in but the seals where the whole thing bolts onto the engine block. 👍
I knew they were an issue on the 1.8/2.0 petrols but I've never heard of them failing on the diesel?

Yep thats what i have done, will try to get an accurate result. I have filled it up today to just under max. As for any leaks around the engine, I have not seen any but will most definitely take a closer look. I will get back to the thread with the results.
