Oil cooler stud removal

I'm in the middle of removing the OE heat exchanger plate and fitting an oil cooler, anyone have any tips on how to remove the long threaded stud that the oil filter and cooler are screwed on to, I've got everything off and just need this stud off so I can fit the short one and Mocal plate.

I've tried the double nut method but it didn't work.

Could you cut a couple of slots into the end of it (tidying the threads) and get a bar through them?

Well I thought of slotting the end of it or even cutting it off at the top end of the unthreaded middle section, which would leave a short threaded section similar to the new short stud. Problem is there is no sideways clearance to get any tools in, has to be done from head on if you know what I mean.
