any ideas if an oil temp sensor can be fitted to a TDI 110 engine. Since the turbo incident considering one to keep on top of temperatures in the car. Is there equivalent of point 10 on the TDI oil filer housing

w rating relates to viscosity when cold ( 0 being the thinnest) , whilst the other number relates to thickness when hot.

Obviously though although the W figure is lower it is actully thicker than when it gets warm

at cold it behaves like a '0' weight oil which is cold
at optimum temp it behaves like a 30 weight oil would at optimum temp

When this was raised months back I emailed my mate at Castrol and he told me that 150 deg C regularly on a road car will need very frequent oil changes even on a top spec oil.

Spot on ED 120-130 ish is o.k but 150+ and your pushing it, miles will take the tole and it will shear, i still say 5-6K oil changes on a modded lcr 5K makes sense as 1/2 way to sevice/oil change anyhow, and yes isay this even running SLX, now castrol edge BTW

but surely seat would have tested the engine/oil in excess of these temps if they are recommending 10k miles service interval. Some of the vw/audis are even longer with their variable limits.

Although I changed the oil on mine every 10k before it was chipped, as it probably wasn't driven quite as VAG intended all the time...

yeah you were a granny. they intended ppl to give it some stick now and then.

Not my advice but does come direct from the horse's mouth of somebody who does the fomulations and testing in F1

mitchy are you using an autogauge oil temp gauge and sender. i have just changed mine for a racetech gauge as i find the autogauge ones hard to read in bright sunlight. Normal cruising with the cooler fitted now sits about 85C compared to 110C on the autogauge. Never goes past 100 compared to 120 with autogauge. Could it be the gauge is wrong? Anyone else using different gauges?

Yes i am, perhaps i should change the gauge and the sender.

However have you fitted an uprated oil cooler? Is this the reason why your oil temp is reading lower than it used to?

is it the j3 autosport gauge? very hard to see in daylight.

mines an LC 242bhp
i get 95 with very gentle driving, 100 impatient drive and upto 120 when its just fun :D whats the usual temp drop when using a cooler?

also.... isnt 85 degrees a bit below normal operating temps?

no, oil temp with cooler fitted was 110c with autogauge but now 85C with racetech gauge. Was 120c without cooler. My friends new focus st never goes above 100C even when thrashing it. usually sits about 85C. I think 80-100C is normal operating temp for oil.
