OliverJ's Leon Cupra R : OZ AP Racing upgrades...

Hi Adam, OZ do the Ultras for 15" upwards. 15" price is around £600 I think for a set of four with tyres. Go to topgear.co.uk - that is where I bought mine from and they are really helpful.

I have had to go with a mid tint visor (helmet is white) as the black one would be impossible to see out of indoors or in low light. I just need to get a head up display in there now like they have in fighter planes - how cool would that be! :D

With regards to discs I would get the best you can afford always, AP Racing are market leaders for a reason with a good pedigree in racing. Mintex, Pagid, the list goes on and I am not the best educated for an opinion - I tend to ask the bloke that does my track day tuition as he has been racing, tutoring and speccing his own for many years.... he is my car bible! If he says no then no it is!!

Not sure about vmaxx, I am still researching into suspension options for mine... but the price sounds good!

I like the vinyl and the debadge on the front - looks really agressive. I bought the honey comb grill to do mine but after 3 hours of trying to get the bumper off and blood everywhere I realised SEAT had ordered me the wrong part!! I was so close to kicking a puppy you would not believe!! I'll post the pictures one day - car looks weird with no face! :headhurt:

Do you have a plan to go on the track with yours? Diesels shame a lot of cars on the track!

Yer ya will have to put some pics of yours up do ya have any goin round the track?.

When i get my new discs think i might copy of you and turn the discs round.

I would love to take my car round a track but would have to wait til i get my coilovers on cause it handles like a boat plus i dont drive that fast lol.

Good thing is i only live about 10 min drive from donnington so its not far to get to.

Thanks for the info aswel

Hi Adam, if you click on the second link in my signature that is a selection of my LCR track shots! First link gives you some better shots of my brake set-up. :D Hopefully I will be able to add some more to them in a week or so, I just need to get the weird noise I currently have sorted.... car is back to my specialist tomorrow night hopefully and with SEAT on Thursday!

You need to make sure you get the right disks - you can't just turn anydisk back to front as the internal grooves (if they are vented) need to be facing the right way otherwise the brakes won't cool properly.

As i said earlier I would get the best you can afford when it comes to tyres and brakes, it doesn't matter how good they look until you need them and they let you down. These are the one thing i have never scrimped on and I was glad for that 5 years ago when a child about 7 years old ran out in front of me just two cars ahead and I stopped an inch or so away from his legs with his hands palm down on the front of my bonnet. i have never felt so sick in my life. I looked across at the car to my right and the driver was clapping me for being able to stop in time.

My suspension is standard and it is pretty good round the track. You would be surprised how any car driven smoothly and correctly will shame a lot of cars on the track relying on speed, gadgets or their upgrades to keep them on the black stuff :D I have done 5 track days and seen smash-ups on three of those. That is quite a high number! Usual factors are over-confidence, tiredness or as per normal roads, not driving within the conditions....

If I get to go on bank holiday Monday I will let you know - you are welcome to a trip round the track if you fancy popping by..... it's the most amazing feeling. :D :D

i think ya twisted my arm think i might go for some of them they look sweet thing is dont have a credit card so wil have to save up shouldnt take long livin at home payin £30 a week board lol[B)]

Good choice Adam, they are a classic design, will give you a far better steering response for the weight saving you get. Better acceleration and braking due to reduced mass, the car doesn't need as much force to rotate the wheel so you get more power to the road. I could go on for hours :D

I think the only decision you need to make is the colour! Black and the anthracite grey would look ace with your red paint work (next door has a Clio trophy with this combo and it looks wow). I have the crystal titanium ones, they look stunning but are hard to keep clean. Leave brake dust on them for more than 7 days and it's not coming off!!!!

The boys on the forum rate the Eagle F1s so you could get a deal on a set of wheels and tyres fitted...

Take my advice, never get a credit card!! You keep saving up for stuff - best way!! ;)

I a very impressed, I wish I could do more with the car but some of it is apprehension at putting my life in my own hands (more so than I do when I drive)... I think i would be fine with oil changes etc but I get a bit nervous when it comes to brakes and would rather leave it to someone who knows what they are doing. I don't really have anyone who can help/supervise me. I suppose what's the worse that could happen!!! :D

I would like to get staainless versions - the current ones look very manky, not happy. I a just about to replace all the wheel nuts as they have tarnished and gone rusty. Why can't things stay as pretty as they look when new!!!!

I am still trying to identify my suspected wheel bearing issue. I have just spent the last hour lying underneath the car with it jacked up and I don't think it is the bearings now. There is no give in the wheels....and it is too intermittent... Plan B!!!

Things can stay as shiny as new, you just can't use them lol. You'd have to park it up in the garage and leave it.... which defeats the purpose!

That wheel bearing sounds like a bit of a :censored:, it could be its starting to fail which is why its intermittent? I replaced both my rear ones after the O/S/R one went, there was no play in the wheel but it would spin for a lot longer than the other one when given a shove. Also had a high-pitched whirring when turning left on the motorway which went away on the straight or turning right.

It is a real buzz Adam, but very intense! Everything happens so fast and the concentration you need going through corners and keeping an eye on all of the cars around you means that you are shattered at the end of the day. :D

I am not that good a driver, I only have 3 years no claims and I have been driving 12 years - been very unlucky with vandalism, break-ins and a ditch! All good experience though. I am currently doing my advanced driving, plus my track tuition (would recommend this) and I got the application pack for my race license through yesterday, just need to book the training now - the plan is to get better and more experienced in the LCR and then buy something quite nice in a few years time when my skill level matches the cars capabilities....

Well the car is off to Warrington tonight so my man can have a look at what the droning noise is, hopefully he can remedy it or give some indication so I can point SEAT in the right direction on Thursday. If it is all sorted by then i will book Donington on Friday (if they still have places). ;)

I have never been to a meet, struggle to find time as I work long hours. I do see quite a few SEATS around Notts though. One of the forum lads from Notts bought my old wheels off me - he has a very nice black LCR that he has tuned up.

No probs on the help, that is what we are here for! :D

Well the good news is that my lovely new shiny bells have arrived! The car is off to Warrington tonight for the bloke that does my tuition/mods for him to have a look/diagnosis. Hope he figures out what it is, I have no clue now. If he gets chance he will fit the bells but it is quite a big job as I didn't realise you have to carefully torque up each of the alan bolts twice and it is a two hour job with new brakes and he will have to take mine off the car and strip/clean them.

SEAT have ordered in some bearings for me for Thursdays warranty work just in case - I am keeping my fingers crossed for Donington on the 25th but it's all up in the air at the moment!!!!!!

I presume you did the bearings yourself. Was it a big job? Some people on the forum have said it's £6 for the bearings and then labour but SEAT Derby indicated it might be £100's to do!?!?!!

Hi Adam.

I forgot to answer that I didn't get chance to look at speedo (too busy looking through corners and watching mirrors) - it was well over 100 though as I can get to that in 3rd and was up to 5th along the straight! :D

I have some more shots you might be interested in at :

I will upload the others when I get chance! Enjoy... :D

Aye the bells look to be a bit of a pain to swap, not difficult just fiddly and time consuming!

The rear bearings are different to the front - you basically replace the hub as well at the one go so its pretty easy and smooth to swap. The fronts I've not had to do yet (thankfully!) they'll be a fair bit more involved and requiring pullers etc to remove the bearing from the hub.

Hope they manage to get it all sorted on Thursday for you, if the stealer has ordered bearings then they must have a hunch themselves. Need more pics from Donny!!

Oliver your saviour comes again!!

It is possible to get a heads up display for your car;)
Not your helmet but on your windscreen

And the front wheel bearing can be an absolute biatch to change, mine was but others have been easy.
To diagnose the wheels bearing find a straight long piece of road thats quite. Switch off air con, radio, GF ie all the noisy things.
Get up to about 60 MPH put car into neutral and weave left and right listening very closely for any slight note change in droan from bearing. It's very very slight.
If the noise is louder when weaving right it's the right etc.

Morning!

Dropped the beast off with my track-man last night. Spoke to him about the bells and they sound like an amazing piece of kit. They ensure that the disk is perfectly flat as opposed to standard one piece disk units. Each bolt is individually torqued to 10 ftlb and ensure that the disk can move when it nmeeds to under duress meaning that it is nearly impossible to warp them no matter how much you punish them! :D

He is going to give the car a once over as well just to make sure he thinks she is ok to take to Dony!!

I have to say it doesn't look like it is bearings but my man will have an answer for me by the end of today. Next project is to sort the callipers - he suggested I ask SEAT UK for a compromise or contribution towards replacing with me fitting them so it keeps their costs minimal. Wish me luck!!! If it is not that expensive to swap the bearings I may get SEAT to do it tomorrow anyway!?!??!?!

They are also fitting a new splitter which i trashed in Sheffield last night coming out of a clients. There were four people just staring at me as I came down this 1/3 incline and the front just scraped all the way up until the road levelled off! Not a pleasent noise

I have some other pics - just need to find some time to upload them - another few crazy days ahead.....

What is your next project?

Nope!!! I was too depressed, it is currently in storage as a bad job. Ithought it might look quite nice as all honeycomb but the other complication is the existing grill is actuially bonded to the bumper, heat sealed almost and I just thought it was getting too complicated. [:@]

She did get a proper wash after that - it is hard to tell from the photos but there is my blood all over the front! I was som mad at one point - the instructions I had got were awful and I broke both fog grills and three of the clips on the front of the engine bay.

The grills are off the Leon FR... I thought about losing the SEAT badge but not sure how it would look. Yours looks ace! :D

Yay!!! You are like my mechanic guardian angel!

The car was delivered to my track man last night and knowing him he will have been working on it since 6:00 this morning - we were able to reproduce the noise last night and early indicators are rear brakes not bearings or front pads sticking, tyre wear or gearbox as suspected :D

How are things with you and where do I get a head's up display from? My tinted visor for the helmet came yesterday - I bought a BTCC Arai helmet so it came with a peak but at least I can swap now depending on what I need it for. Bank jobs or track days! :D

So what you been up to? Have you finished the book yet?

The Aria Helmet got all the big ups it needed by Hampster surviving a pretty much fatal accident soley due to that helmet
When do you get the noise that you suspected to be your wheels bearing.
I'm getting a noise that I'm starting to think might be the diff on its way out. I get it when booting it out of corners.

Was at Seat yesterday, the guys reconned Seat wouldn't do anything due to the car being 5 years old. I told him I'll be intouch with my solicitor, we'll see what he says

Not good about your gear box JS... what would the cost be to sort it? Just trying to weigh up the benefits of legal action and 50/50 outcome against paying for it to be sorted yourself. Not a nice situation to be in, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

It is a great helmet - I got the 5W in Stig White :D Hopefully will get chance to fit the visor tonight...

I have spoken to my track man, I was right he had been working on the car since 6:00am this morning!!! He rang me at 12:00 to say he had nearly finished the fronts and would be done in an hour but had been unable to find anything to justify the droning.

He then rang me back at 12:45 to say that the back off-side pads were well and truly badgered!!!! He asked me if I had gone round Donington with the hand brake on! Joker.

That would explain the intermittancy, the wear, the noises and the sluggish feel to the car!!! Good news is he was able to source the Mintex pads locally, bad news is it has screwed up his afternoon! Better news is Donington looks to be on for the 25th!!! Yay!!!

Worse news is 11+ hours of labour plus parts to be billed, but he is very good, he only charges £20 an hour and I trust him with my life hence my eagerness to do the 200 mile round trip to get it to him. :D

Heading off in 30 mins in the Seat Arosa with he-man dual controls he has let me borrow! Looking forward to getting back into mine!!!!

Hopefully making some progress with SEAT on the calipers, they have requested I submit photos and a log including cleaning method and dealership requests etc then they will consider it.

Watch this space!!!!!

If all your problems are sorted for £200 you can't complain, wish I could say the same thing
Looks like Seat might be doing something for you, thats great.
A new gear box is mega bucks, a second hand one is £750. For that price I can get a diff;) and check the torque regularly:)
I'm in contact this a few people who might be able to help me further any claims etc with Seat, they've not gotten away with this yet;)

I'm back!!! Car feels ace! Have to bed the pads in for 200 miles but I think all the issues are sorted. She felt like a new car on the way back.

Today will cost me between £5-600 I reckon with new pads, bells and labour but he has spent a long time on it. Stripped everything down, cleaned and rebuilt - that is how he noticed the off side pads. He reckons I am half way on the AP disks too or 4 track days so i'll be needing a new set in Jan I reckon. :D

Feels good to have the car back. Donington is a goer!!!! Booking it in a few minutes.

I am not out of the woods with SEAT over my calipers - got to compose an email shortly and attach photos. Hope it is a positive result but it could swing either way at the moment. I hope there is a positive outcome for yours. - the last thing you want to be doing is spending that kind of money...

We should keep our fingers crossed!!! Let's hope SEAT come good for both claims!!! :D
