I'm stuck on the decision to either get finance for an FR+ TDI or go for a much cheaper and older Cupra 20VT that requires no financing.

What do you think to this one please? Does it look like a fair deal?

Seeing as Gordon Brown is going to utterly shaft everyone today, I'd suggest the oil burner. It might not sound or smell nice, but the road tax/petrol bills could well be worth holding your nose and ears.

What about a second hand LCR, they are getting cheap now especially for what you get. Buying new means you will obviously take the hit on the depreciation so bare that in mind depending on how long you are keepig it for.

Why not get a 53-54 cupra diesel, same as an FR for that sort of money!

Seems a little bit on the steep side to me, I paid £1,500 less for a year older car with full Seat SH and 50k on the clock from a dealer. Got a full service (with belt change), MOT and 1 year 5 Star RAC warranty for that.

go for the FR TDI......you wont regret it!!!
cheaper to run, tax and probably insure. and with a remap (if you want even more performance) quicker than a cupra 20vt.

Thats quite a nice example, silver ones seem to fetch less for some reason. I managed to get mine for only a few hundred more than that but 14k less miles.

I love my Cupra 20vt, i wouldnt change it for the world, and now i have pumped the tyres up to the correct pressures i can get 35 mpg quite happily. (for me thats fine - i would rather that and have the noise and atmosphere of a petrol turbo)

Each to their own at the end of the day, personally i reckon if you offer him 7.750 he should take it or negotitate at least.

Thanks for the offer Fester but the missus wants Silver.....
Whilst I like silver, I would rather find the perfect car regardless of colour (except Ovni... ). I think I like Platinum grey the best.

I'm gonna stick to a budget of 8000. That way i don't need additional financing.

I'm in no massive hurry, except the missus' 1.2 Punto is demasculating me! I feel polluted! Anytime between Christmas and end of February for me to find the perfect Leon Cupra 20VT or 150 Tdi in Silver with lowish miles.

If anyone spots any let me know...

I doubt you'll see a sooty 150 for 8k ...... but definitely a 20VT

Mmmmm I know I'd have to pay more for a Sooty, but eh, I can always sell the 20VT after a while and upgrade to a Sooty or LCR.

I aint ever getting a mk2 Leon though, they are bile inducing

The 20vt and sooty are pretty much a level playing field, if you do more than say 20k a yr go for the diesel if you are fussed over mpg.
I do 25k + pa but i dont have to pay petrol lol - honestly the 20vt's are fabulous and so capable and great value to boot. Just watch auto trader, there a quite a few popping up at the moment.

although youll be paying a monthly premium for the TDI, you will be spending out less on fuel each month. lets say the finance is £200 a month but you save £50 a month on fuel. your outgoings will only be £150 more for the newer tdi

thats how id look at it. plus the TDI will keep better residules.

Unless your doing a lot of miles get the petrol. Why get yourself in debt when you dont have to. Plus you get bigger brakes on the 20VT and a nicer sounding engine that doesn't sound like an old tractor.

I'll only be doing around 10000 to 12000 per year though. Believe me I want the sooty but I just can't justify it at around £3-5k more on initial outlay......and more importantly, I hate debt

Out of interest why do you want the diesel so badly?

If it is what you want, get an Ibiza 130 Tdi instead, The difference in petrol costs is so negligable on that milage the i personally cant see the benefits.

I think you have a very mature attitide though, all credit to you, debt is horrible, i wanted a LCR but i bought the Cupra because i have no debt on this car and it actually pays me money to drive it! I cant say i regret it one bit either
