opinions on tyre width and mpg

MPG is all about how wide the tyres are....the important thing is to stay with the diameter of the 205/40-17. go wider and stay with teh 40's you might face some rubber rubbing.

But i assume you have tuned the crap out of the car and you're concerned about MPG? :)

nah i just went to a wheek/tyre place that was recommended by a body shop here and he said '215's will fit'

had no problems with rubbing, just this mpg.

wierd is im on about 310 miles with quarter left, the needle has gone to halfway from the quarter marker to zero, the beep came on and all of a sudden i have 25 miles left @ 340 on the clock. i usually get 100 miles per quarter fuel gauge.

really not sure i believe it. and some gentle driving put the remaning from 20, to 25 miles.

only local driving over the weekend so im going to put a 5 litre diesel can in the boot and drive it till it stops
