hi there ive been driving my car fo the last 3 days and ive ha no problem.i went out in the car last nite and it over heated.i let the car cool down and filled it back up with water and drove it to a garage where i could put more water in it.i left the car running and the temp was reading half way but the water was boiling over the side of the bottle badly and the fan had not cut in.
has any1 got any ideas as of wat this could be?

also does anyone know where the thirmastat is on the 2.0l 8v?could not find it and that mite be the cause.

any help will be much appriciated.:(

id say the fan switch isnt working. . if its like the golf it stuck in the bottom of the rad on the left hand side. the temp switch i on the right hand side of the block where the rad top hose fits. if it over heats all the time the head gasket could of gone. not sure if thats much help.
just read you post again. if you mean the thermostat that that opens and shuts at given temps. its in the outlet of the water pump bottom right hand side

ok well im gana take the thermastat out and try that but im thinkin theres a split in the gasket as its not leaking water but seems to be dissapearing.i filled it up earlier and drove 3 miles down the road and by that time it was boiling over and very presurised and i put a further 4 litersbin it to fill it bk up again.now that isnt rite.

im gana do a compression test 2morr so if any1 knows wat the compression on the pistons are would help.thanks

must be leaking somewhere to need 4L putting in, that's almost dry

check the rad for leaks, they 'go' at the end tanks

thermostat, not sure, but remove it anyway

I had this problem on my mk2, Turned out to be that my bottom rad hose had jumped out of its holder and was touching the fan which caused it to split:doh: £25 later and 20minutes work and all was fine again!

well after takin the thirmastat out and trying it and it still boiling up i checked the pressure on the iston and the results were 12 7 12 12 so there would be the prob a split in the head gasget wich is then lettin the water go out the exhaust when bein driven.

now how much is a new gasket gana cost u think?

got to strip it all apart now and get head re skimmed and all that.

great:doh:

my mate's head gasket went on his punto the other week, cost him 600 quid all together, including skimming and new parts etc, he needed a whole new cylinder head as well. most people write off there cars when head gaskets go, but as your doing it yourself probs will be about 200quid or so?
