Latest 16th April 2006:

Car was all ready to go at Aintree this coming weekend, suspension mods felt great etc, but was chasing a rough spot in the engine at approx. 7K, thought it was electical since the engine seemed mint before then but then just went harsh and didn't want to rev (very unusual for this engine). Had a RR session last week to try and sort out but then the worst phonecall arrived.....its blown.

Done lots of detective work since then and it seems whats happened is that sometime end of last year, probably broke a valve spring with an over-rev (seem to remember missing a gear at Aintree so this could have done it) so since then that valve has been running on one spring (they have 2 each, one inside the other). One spring will keep the cam follower on the cam till about 7K, after that the valve/follower starts to bounce (this will be the rough sound I was hearing, kind of like bouncing a marble on a stone floor). Well after a few times bouncing whilst trying to find out what was going on, the valve retainers will have jumped out and the valve dropped in the engine. Real easy to say this after the event....not so obvious whats wrong before hand.

Took the engine out Sun (thanks for help Chris) and both inlet valves on Cyl 4 are broken and there is quite a bit of engine damage, exactly how much I dont know as my engine guy has asked if I would send him back the engine without stripping it so he can fully investigate whats happened. One of the pistons is scrap as it has a valve stuck in the top of it and a big hole in the crown, the cyl head is damaged as the sump was full of water, the block will likely be scored. Cams look fine as do other 3 cylinders. How bad all these things are remains to be seen as does whats involved in sorting them - I will know next week once he has the engine. Being a dry sump engine, all the oil lines are full of metal particles.....6 meters of them.....and the oil tank is also so lots of cleaning to be done. Going to investigate the lines today, might be cheaper/better for sanity just to get new ones. Not sure how dry sump tanks are cleaned since they are full of baffles and its hard to see if they are clean or not. Will investigate.

So the season has taken a serious hit before its even started. Pissed off isn't the word. Need to find out exactly what needs to be done / costs involved before making any further decisions.

This is to let folks know, dont come to the early races expecting to see me/car. I will post up here when its all sorted. And I dont really want to talk about it right now.

Cheers

Rob

Ouch, sorry to hear about the engine, I (like lots of others I'm sure) had been following the winter suspension and braking mod's etc and your car looked to have just come together perfectly for the season.

Hope you get it sorted soon

Thats terrible news Rob, sorry to hear this, after all the work you've put in over the winter too. :( These things are obviously sent to try us.

Hopefully it won't be off the track too long. Best of luck getting it sorted soon.

Latest - engine is on the mend and will be back with me in under a month all being well - lots of damage......2 broken valve springs on inlets on cyls 1 + 4 were the culprits. New super strength valve springs going in on rebuild but lifed for 5000km only, then need a check - the price of a high redline - anyone revving a valver above 7.5K beware. New engine higher spec than previous.......:)

Whilst engine is out, have been taking opportunity to do a few mods - done front crossmember bushes (Mk2 golf powerflex fit) and ordered a new radiator - 100mm shorter than std, 51mm WRC-spec core, using std mounts and hose connections, also with twin super slimline lightweight spal fans. Getting it from Radtec in Cannock, Staffs - very helpful guys - actually made the rads for the Ibiza F2 cars they told me. Once short rad is in, airbox going above it - custom 100mm x 480mm ITG panel filter due to arrive next week - should be good for some ram air effect and more torque.

Cannot wait to get out there again

Ave it

wonder how loud it will be with the new airbox setup m8. (thinking trackday noise people who do so enjoy their jobs )

remembering graham vanstones 20v atmo.. had lifed valvesprings too... but his dropped a valve too :( Deado engine

Old springs were from Kent apparently and good for 13mm and 10K rpm - and extensively tested on lots of high power turbo motors - but the man tells me he has had several failures recently and suspects its due to very agressive ramp angles on atmo cams - accelerates the valve very quickly - so these new ones are from Cat themselves and they reckon they are up to the job - we will see - it seems that its a bit of an issue on 8K+ engines.

Thing is, I know what a broken spring feels like on the engine now - and it didn't drop the valve immediately, it took quite a bit of pushing actually whilst trying to find out what the issue was - so hopefully I will spot it next time. Also, seriously considering having the engine checked over at end of each year - its a hassle but not that bad really.

I think noise will be less than present setup

dual springs.... unlike 20v motors... :(

very interesting - didnt know that - no room for twin springs I guess - this is a major shortfalling of using the 20V as a tuned atmo motor then cf. a 16V

Picking up in 2 weeks time - carn't wait, its gonna rock

Radiator is finished, picking up Sat and got airfilter - coming together

Ave it
