They feel quicker because the owners think they have more power under the bonnet than what they really have ;)

Its funny though, VW driver mag tested a PD 150 and a petrol with 150bhp, guess which had the better times? so maybe it is possible the diesel sometimes give more than qouted but doesnt mean they all do.

nope, i have seen rr results that are spot on the quoted figures. However never ever seen a standard car making less than the figure it is listed at. Even the mags sayits wierd to find a pd 130 or 150 actualy chucking out 130 150 respectively in standard form. whatever it is, its damn good!!

Mine's less, according to the JBS rollers  A whole 1.5 (approx) bhp less :D

Maybe I should complain to Seat :D

there has to be tollerances manufactured into the engine and they will always want to err on the higher side so people don't get upset with lower figures. I would think the tollerances would only bew a few bhp and the rest is down to environmental conditions, i.e. rolling road, temperature, condition and age of the car.

I recon you would have a job feel 10 bhp differnece on the road anyway. You feel responsiveness more, hence allowing a car to breathe better makes it feel more responsive but may not increase bhp at all.

None of what I said is scientific fact just my thoughts.

theoretically the manufacturers would rather we were not finding out what out bhp figures are at all.

Our old Ibiza TDi FR 130 with Revo felt deceptively quick because of the excessive torque produced by the high compression ratio mated with a turbo. When people say compare a 130 diesel and petrol engine, its like comparing cheese with goats. For a start, if you took the turbo off a diesel it would become far less effective than its petrol equivalent (also with its turbo removed). Look back to old SDi VAG cars and the bhp's / torque were pitiful.

Somehow when a turbo is mated to the diesel engine with its high compression ratio and PD system and the fuel starts to offer up its values. However its still a very different type of power to that of a petrol engine with a turbo running a 9.5:1 compression ratio (with heat soak).

I really rate the new diesels, and although I've gone back to petrol for now they make a lot of sense for anyone doing proper mileage. However the development curve to get them there has been large, and up until late the petrol engines haven't evolved so much (until FSI was launched). Whether new FSI T engines can help petrol claw against diesel to make petrol cars a long term option is too early to say.

With the dyno lotteries of late, BHP means so sweet FA. Particularly when you are talking +/-10bhp at our values. I've had a rolling road recently of 231bhp in my 225R with stage 2. And its running perfectly. I could travel up the road and get 270, and others on here say they have seen 300ish with very little difference in mods. This year I have decided to discount RR figures. The drag strip is my only way of telling whether the performance is there or not. I'm sure no matter how quick they feel as standard that VW would be legislated to be +/-5% in terms of absolute power.

you are right to an extent, diesels are at the end of the curve.

To back this up, VW will not being doing any more developement on diesel engines after 2007,

Remember that the standard engine outputs are measured in PS - eg the PD 130 is 130PS, or approximately 128bhp.

So your Cupra 150 will actually be something like 147bhp, which means the JBS rollers weren't far off at all :)
