Is it reasonably safe to drive without this? The snow has all but ripped it off - its still attached at the front but is flapping around at the back giving about 2 inches of ground clearance. Its now catching every little thing on the road, including the pile of snow that is left in the centre of the carriageways.

Is anything likely to be damaged by driving without it for a while?

It'll just get really dirty and mucky without it. The plastic tray also affords a little bit of protection to the alloy stuff at te bottom of te engine/gearbox.

You can drive without it but I'd get it fixed/replaced when it gets a bit warmer.

If it is just the screws missing, take one from each front inner wheel arch that secures the front bumper to the body. Use those 2 screws to re-attach the tray to the car. Thise screws are used all over the car and are easy to get.

took mine off 6 months ago. it means if u have a leak oil or water you will notice it a lot quicker rather than if the tray was on.

It also means all the bottom of the engine and everything else is exposed to weathering that it wasn’t design to be especially on the TDI engines. If you have a leak and are reasonably astute you should be able to spot any leaks without needing to remove it.

never had one on mine didnt even realise they came with them.

mines one of the first 2002 tdis did they all come with them?

People in the states are sticking metal sump gaurds on there vw tdi's. You can get the plastic cover from the dealer though. I don't think you'll get any real problems with it off but my engine bay looks mank so I'm intending to get a new one. (Eventually)

Mine is thoroughly cable tied on moreorless all the way round. The only screws that still work are the ones that go into the bottom of the bumper. Cable ties are absolutely fine. It came loose about six months ago, not long after I had the cambelt done, I think the people at awesome gti mustn't have re-fitted all the cable ties I used. I took it off 'til I did my next oil change then re-fitted it. It has several advantages being fitted, in addition to those listed above, it helps with sound deadening, which is useful on a diesel. Mine is noticeably louder without it. Also, it's an aerodynamic aid and smooths out the airflow under the car. However, how much difference it makes, I do not know.
