Having bought a new filter to fit, I did sort of figure out how... except when I exposed the housing, I found it seems that my front panel is missing, thus nothing holds the filter element in!
Anyhow, the trick is to remove the large plastic panel at the rear of the engine bay (i.e. above the engine, below the bonnet shut-line/leaf screen). From memory it's secured by some bolts at each end.
Sliding this panel out is a little awkward as it caught a bit on the coolant bottle, but once it is out, you should find the air-con intake box/filter housing on the left handside of the car (i.e. on your right as you look under the bonnet from the front).
I guess you'll be lucky enough to find a cover & filter fitted, whereas I found a big empty plastic box!
