well on a 2.0 8v ibiza i got 32mpg average (2e engine), on previous to that same engine size etc about 34mpg.

One thing that is often overlooked because its so simple and cheap as to seem unimportant is the air filter. On a mini i was using nearly 3x too much fuel, thought i had a major leak, it was only when i lifted off the air filter that sits on top of the carb when the engine was running i noticed the engine note change, and found a filthy air filter.

If you have no fault codes then a good old fashioned check is required, air filter, and listen around the engine for air leaks, check all pipes etc.

Iv got the equivalent of the powertec SL1 stainless mess air filter, maybe worth giving it a clean?

Also, with that some filter oil etc may have found its way onto the maf sensor? so brake cleaner to clean it up may help. (ie incorrect air readings to ecu and fueling).

Incidentally, in smug mode ive got a slow but functional ibiza sdi, im getting 70mpg.

Nice!!! Nah just had a new MAF, and the powertecs dont use oil, they are an oil free induction.

Fancy selling the ibiza?

Id be considering as mentioned before air pipes etc. Also did you replace the tb gasket with a new one? maybe also exhaust manifold and inlet manifold.

its clutching at straws time.

very odd, id have thought if it was using too much fuel etc then you would get a lamda fault code so its a bit baffling.

only other thing, are you getting the reading from the trip computer? might be worth filling up, noting the miles and working it out the old fashioned way to check if the trip is accurate. aside from that im out of ideas

TB was done by a garage, so iv no idea about the gasket, just found an SDI on autotrader, 75k miles , £900, bargain.

If you spray something like easy start, you can use wd40 but it contains silcon, which can be bad for the o2 sensor. Anyhow, easy start is flammable, so take care, but spray that around the tb gasket with the engine running and the note/revs will change if there is a leak, as its basically extra fuel being drawn in.

you can do the same for vacuum pipes etc, just not too much as its still flammable.
