Can anyone tell me what thread/size the nuts are for the shocks on the rear?

My mate managed to shear the thread trying to get it on, got some 10mm's but they dont fit (too tight/wrong thread)

I mean the top ones. I went to VW and they said they were M10's, got some M10's and they dont fit!

If I am picking you up correctly, you are meaning that you bought some new M10 nuts - but not from a VAG dealer, what has happened there is that VAG, and others, tend to use metric fine threads and/or extra coarse ones, depending on the "size" and application. The normal run-of-the-mill bolts and nuts that you can get your hands onto easily tend to come with only what is considered "standard" threads - I've been there done that - but I only had trouble with cleaning up external threads mainly so bought a big but cheap tap and die set from Screwfix as it covered most of these fine sizes. Originally I supidly just aquired some M6 or M8 or M10 nuts - but quickly changed my ways - get the right ones from VAG. On the other hand, the parts lists tend to accurately describe the thread - I think. And yes as said M10 is a nut or bolt thread size, 10mm is the spanner size - ie 10mm across the flats, from memory 13mm could be the spanner size for either M8 or M10 - can't remember which - but that assumes that the nut is not a nyloc nut , just a plain nut.
