I wish to remove the air con from my fr tdi. I dont plan on selling the car so its another stage of modding im prepared to do after fitting my decat, partial smoothing of the airbox (to finish that) and the diy shortshifter.

Ive done it before on previous cars and only end up leaving the matrix for the A/C in the car. Apart from removing the componentry from under the bonnet, fitting a non A/C 1.9tdi aux belt what else would i need to do?? I know obviously the button on the climate will still ''work'' though i was wondering if this could be deactivated via vagcom??

Im guessing that its a dash out job to remove the AC matrix in the dash and that also the cold air that the car produces without AC is like most cars in that its a fan with an outside air feed typically under or near the scuttle panel?

can i ask why?

dont use it, mainly drive at night, the weather is crap and never hot enough to warrant it. If your stuck on the motorway in summer i always switch the engine off and stand outside the vehicle if its to hot, I found windows open on nice days is nicer than A/c, less drag on engine, weight saving albeit it however small will go some way to compensate for further weight additions in the future from poss 4x4 addition, rear arb's, bigger brakes.

fair enough, its a myth about it drainig power from the engine though - all you need do is turn it off, it lays dormant and uses no more fuel or loses no more performance than a vehicle without a/c.

Some models you have to replace the front aux component mountong due to the location of the pump on the leon if the a/c pump is at the bottom them you might get away with it.

will get some pics to confirm its location. I know it only uses power from the engine when in use and it just free wheels hence the electomagnetic clutch. I figuer the weight saving would be good and also benefit the fmic by not having the a/c rad in the way. For myself its a win win situtation.

i definatley agree with you on this.

the only bits to remove that'll be a pain are the pipes, unless you just rag them out.

thats the plan ;)

i also plan on doing what i can to try and get a more balanced car, by loosing weight on the front end and relocating things to the boot it can do nothing but good. I dont need a big boot as i got a towbar and a small daxara trailer ftw.

a small saw will help out tremendously, the pipes are only aluminium so they'll cut and break easily.

air saw ftw me thinks. will have to get a pic of the pump up here to see if its a simple unbolt job or more involved.

Airsaw - read my mind!

compressor:

2 bolts
2 a/c pipes
1 plug
1 belt

thats it.

When the hvac (A/C) system registers a fault the a/c function will be completely disabled but it will allow the heaters to function as normal.

the a/c button on the display will not work and the snowflake will remain off.

The pipes are a biatch, don't envy anyone who has to take those pipes out with the engine in tbh!

cheers for the heads up. I didnt realise its a common-ish thing from the above two posts. Airsaw ftw and some patience me thinks. I am purchasing a cupra r bumper so when thats painted ill do the rad then and anything i cant do easily.
