Renault Megane 250 Cup v Focus RS v SEAT Leon Cupra R v Golf GTI

Let's not be too hard on EVO. I remember a group test involving the Mk1 Cupra R some time back and it won against all the competition at the time, they loved it.

To me the Mk2 Cupra R does't go far enough and doesn't seem quite as special as the Mk1 though for value it has the others beaten and to give it such a low score when it beat the rest at the track sounds a bit odd so I'm not totally on EVO's side here. I think a non-to-plush cabin put them off, something that very nearly put me off my current Mk2 Cupra but I managed to see through it.

Back from the dead
I drove the facelift Leon Cupra the other day and I have to say despite having spent 3 years in the Audi I thought it felt very nice to drive, sounded good, and the interior was a vast improvement over previous version.

Journo's can sometimes be like drawcord dolls. You pull the cord and they spout the same shyte. All the journo's who ever drive an Audi in the mags say the steering is wooden and they lack excitement. They all jack off to the Golf, then slander the SEAT.

Basically other than the cosmetics they are all the same bloody car (ignoring Haldex). So how can they be that different? In parts yes, but the formula is basically the same.

All these cars are so close now that it's pretty much badge preference which splits them for the buyer. One might have a gnats chuff benefit on a track, and another on a B road, but in the grand scheme of things it's just pedantics.

At the end of the day buy what you enjoy. Some of these guys were probably working for What Caravan last month, so to let them guide us with £20k+ is madness. No substitute for getting behind the wheel yourself.

I was looking to buy Focus RS but the "Fraud" dealer was not too helpful and the price was a bit too much with full spec.

I have allways liked the exterior of mk2 leon and I like facelift interior alot... so I ordered Cupra R with full specs (all but no leather seats - too slippy :p ) Don't know why EVO whines so much about interior and handling... Some magazines actually say they like them.

The difference between R and normal Cupra may sound small but It's what you get more...
* Standard cupra doesn't have alcantara seats as standard
* Better sounding exhaust with R
* Larger intercooler with R
* 19" wheels (white) with R
* Better suspension (+longer rubber bushes) with R
* Snappier gearshifting (+reinforced gearbox) with R

For me it was a simple choice: I would have had to buy all above as an optional extra with normal Cupra (made Cupra R cheaper for me).

Also you must consider:
* The R status :)
* "Sleeper" Style: it goes, but doesn't show it too much :funk:

My last car was 182 HP Fiesta ST (cams, exhaust, induction, dreamscience chip...). So Cupra R is a big improvement over that [B)] (sold now)

I'm happy, but just can't wait 'till I get it :D

I chose white wheels to make it more special. I previously had white wheels with black car, looked nice imo :D

I also did a quick photoshop of it, but can't post the link yet.

out of curiosity how did you "order" the R when the details haven't been released yet? :shrug:

I'm from Finland and we have had all Cupra R details/pricing since november. :)

(I think I have mentioned this earlier on some other thread, where I was wondering how come you don't have that info yet...)

crikey and you ordered it in November! :confused:

Nope, the final order was placed on 21.12.2009 :D First I had a big arm-wrestle with salesman about details and then I was ready to order :) (a whole month of arm-wrestling made my arm and elbow sore :lol: )
