There are two service indicators on the MQB platform cars. An oil service and and inspection service. The method you describe above resets the oil service interval (and not longlife). Inspection service can only be completed by dealer VAS or VCDS etc.

Have a look at Vehicle > Settings > Service on the infotainment to see what is displayed for each.

I've reset both by being persistent and pressing I know not how many times. A pain, but worked for me (each year for the last several).

So have I for 6 years always worked,will keep trying
