I have to admit I have let the paint work go abit. I want to get it looking good again.

I've got the normal swirl marks, a few light scratches and i've got a faded patch on the front edge of my bonnet on the drivers side.

I've looked at filling polishes. What would be the best way to get the car looking at its best.

I know a machine polish would be a good start but i don't have the funds at the moment.

At the moment I'm using the following products.

Meguiars Nxt Generation Car Wash
Meguiars Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner
Meguiars Deep Crystal Car Polish
Meguiars Deep Crystal Carnauba Car Wax

Thanks

Hi mate, the problem with the products you have listed is that they're not really designed to tackle scratches and swirls, particularly not if done by hand. They are ok to restore the shine between polishes but not much cop at removing swirls, scratches etc.

If you can't stretch to a detail try popping back to Halfords and getting some Autoglym Super Resin Polish, easily available and by hand it works well. Of course it has fillers as we all know but again if you're not using a machine you aint gonna get those swirls out anyway so may as well get rid of a few and hide a few. Plus the Megs wax you have won't last more than a few weeks.

If you're ever in Manchester lemme know :)

I've made a start on my emocion red lcr, although I am using a machine polisher the products I'm using are megs ultimate compound, clearkote yellow moose glaze and megs next gen tech wax, removes all swirls an gives the paint a really lovely deep high gloss finish!

Can't recommend it enough!

what kind of machine would you use, got a flash red Ibiza that needs a good polish as has all the marks, got megs ultimate compound and ultimate polish and was but getting tires of doin it by hand and it dost seem to be doin much unless I'm doin it wrong

cheers Tom

By hand you will actually destroy yourself to get any kind of decent result! I bought a kestrel das6 pro dual action machine polisher using a selection of mezerna pads.... I certainly can't complain about the quality of the finish!!

By hand you better be prepared for hard graft and aching arms... couple to that a finish which looks nice from 6ft away but really only masks the swirls and finish close up.

If you want to get rid of swirls the only way is by machine. DA machines are user friendly and can be picked up pretty cheaply now. Gone are the days of the £180 Megs G220 being the only UK option !

For compounds and pads you could do a lot worse than Menzerna sample kits (250ml bottles) and Chemical Guys Hex Logic pads. IMO 1 cutting, 2-3 polishing and 2 finishing pads would be a good base to start with.

DetailingWorld's forsale section has a lot of products for sale from the members which is worth a look ;)

You can get decent results by hand, but it'll hurt!! Take a look at something with micro abrasives, such as GTechniq P1, which will work relatively well - tape off a line and work up to it, to see the difference

I'm correction an Emoc Red Leon FR TDI BTCC on Saturday, so I'll post up so that you can see what can be achieved by machine - happy to give you a hand at some point in future too :)

Thanks,

Russ

best get looking for a machine then :) getting my new bumpers resprayed so want the rest of the car looking as good :) cheers for all the help :)

registered will have to have a proper look, want my car to shine, that kit I posted usually goes for bout 50 quid but just need to make sure it will do ta job,

get what you mean bout being confusing though haha :)

If it was me id buy a dual action polisher for starters, much safer and using it on my emocion red paintwork has worked a treat. Get on cleanyourcar.co.uk, there is plenty of products there, they will be more expensive than the one you found but they are guaranteed to do the job. Buy once buy right I'd say!

I've considered buying a machine polisher but don't have the confidence to use it. I've heard you can burn the paint if your not careful.

Has anybody tried mequiars swirl x?

I've read a lot about how people should start with a DA then move to a rotary.

I've never had a DA I went straight in for the rotary.

I saw a video an automotive painter (Jake on here) posted on detailing world showing just how strong modern paint is. He put a rotary polisher on its fastest setting (3000prm IIRC) with the most aggressive cutting pad and held it on the panel so hard it bent the panel, he put all of his body weight on it and it did nothing to paint, only removed the swirl marks, the paint was fine.

I'm not saying go lean on it, but you will be fine, have it on its lowest setting and don't apply any pressure to it, let the weight of the polisher do the work, all you need to do it move it over the paintwork.

Yeah, i saw that post on DW and a few others sites... i'm not slating his work or experience but what i will say is not all paint is the same, not all clearcoat is the same and a lot of the time cars from the same manufacturer can be slightly different. So although his post shows its not easy to burn through paint, it does make it look as though any tom, **** or harry could pickup a rotary polisher and use it risk free...

Machine polishing isnt a black art but it also isnt something you should just jump into... you have to know something about what you are doing or you will cause damage to the paint. Maybe not burn through but the risk of marring or holograming is very easy to achieve if you just jump into it.

well got a rotary polisher and using my maguires ultimate compound and ultimate polish seems to be working, done half the bonnet and there's nearly no marks left on it ad it's a real deep shine :) easier than what you might think, my painter mate is getting me some g3 compound for the deeper scratchers and some wet and dry

happy days :) I'l get some piks up after I've finished the bonnet on wed
