Sat nav, it’s Crazy

I keep reading statements like that, and I wonder in what way is Google maps (other than being more up to date of cousre) a so much better pefoming product? I have (fortunately it seems) an MIB2 high, and the native nav works perfectly well - much better than the versions I had in my A4 and S3 when it comes to re-routing on the fly.
Mib3 doesn't have the previous destination menu to the extent so you have to keep typing destinations back in compared with mib2... that's my understanding. I run with about circa 250 destinations and Poi import like conventional GPS. Mib3 doesn't match a conventional GPS navigation system or an online one with the extent of favourites so is poor substitute for either. That's my take on mib3 plus the performance issues. Guess it will be improved in this version or another. There was a previous incarnation mib2.5 but never got to Seat with online services. If it had the same destination and previous destination store plus poi import I'd be happy plus the bugs ironed out. Essentially that was the old connected system that Seat never got, worked well. Connected services give you the real time traffic conditions so your routing can be adjusted. The TMC method of Mib2 isnt so timely. Reckon the real time traffic flow speed data is pooled these days from providers but it's that data that gives the edge over mib2 which connected cars, Android Auto and Car Play get..

I can see that this is not the same issue, but one time during my 5000 miles I had my satnav start misbehaving. It was a really bizarre situation where for about 50 miles my satnav was misplacing me on the map by at least miles (I was driving so hard to really measure). It did not seem to be jumping randomly but rather that I was offset by several miles from my location. I know it's not map related as I drove the same route multiple times.

Next time I got into the car, GPS/sat nav worked as normal.
Reckon that's poor satellite lock. Mib2 high retrains itself after software fiddling to get the car back on the road. Car Play issue suspect again poor satellite lock, may be interference between the Apple phone and mib3. We assume these cars have the GPS aeriel plugged in the back. If using mib3 without Android Auto or Car Play and it takes a wander and the weather isn't adverse and not in a built up area / no mountains then it has an issue. mib2 standard circa 2019 locks onto about 30 satellites probably US, Russian and Chinese (rock solid). Mib2 high 2016 locks onto the standard US GPS ones circa 10-12. If you get down to 5 then things can start to go wrong and it will throw you off road. Handheld device you disengage GPS and re-engage. Feels like you need a reboot with the long press on the on/off.... it really shouldn't be doing that thou.

It was a country road, good weather, no problems to report really. It just started to report the wrong position but it was not jumping all over the place, it was just like it had an offset to my proper location. The car was "driving" on the map as I was, but it was in the wrong spot.

It happened once in over 4 months so maybe a sporadic issue (cosmic ray? :D) but I don't use satnav very often. If it keeps happening I will report it.

Definitely a defect. Mib2 is much more reliable. I get the one on my 12 year old device when walking of moving you off location by a set amount (irritating when it happens). That's poor satellite lock. Jamming can have the same effect hence I wonder whether Apple phone users are getting interference between the car and phone for those people reporting it. Syria border got subjected to jamming once in Jordan had to turn round and retrace the journey to get it working again, which it did. They ban GPS navigation. Happended once in MK... that one was strange. Probably signal interference. Using phone for navigation.

Seriously?

I may be well out of the loop here, so be kind. Has anyone figured out / had corrected the issue with the in car system displaying GPS co-ordinates instead of road names, yet?

I think that is suppose to be sorted out in an update... that's the one where it gives you a grid point off the map for a postcode, now puts you on the map if you have a particular map release.... see if I can find that link to the post where I was quizzing someone on it. They must have sorted out their look up tables now so it works correctly if that's the issue. I'll put the link below.... there wont' be many posts on here talking about postcode centroids ;). Basically the postcode -> centroid... now they got the postcode -> the road.

Consideration seems to be it's sorted on from here:

I also so gave @dan555 some test postcodes where the centroids were off road and it put them on road so that release manages to sort it out. Think it's the online map release with lookup tables which work for the UK. It's just the way that the developers of the car's system used the Here Maps release tables. They had been misused.... that's what I think. Red herring of privacy settings had been suggested... but you really need the latest maps... if indeed it's sorted. Dan was on firmware 1672, navigation 21.5 think it's the latter one that's the fix.

Ah OK. I’m on Nav 20.5 so that probably why I’m still seeing the co-ordinates. Thanks for the detailed response, much appreciated. 🙌🏼

Does anyone know why when using the sat nav, some areas on the map are lighter (like its highlighting areas) and some are darker?

Urban areas darker ?, unless it's giving you some relief. Look around Snowdonia say. Mib2 does give you some relief when in the 3D mode by shading. You may also find shading on the edge of towns if it means urban conurbation. The source Here Maps data does have that it. Might do both hills and urban conurbations 😉.

That would make sense yet when I pass towns which are obviously an urban area some are shaded some not, it just doesn't seem to make any sense of what it is and isn't shading. i will try to take some pictures.
