OP, please also be aware (if you are not already), that a new rack will almost certainly require a certain amount of coding. It isn't necessarily a case of just bolting it in.

If you do manage to find a rack and fit it, any decent local indy VW specialist, or even a good auto-electrician, should be able to recode it for you if it needs it ?.

i am getting quoted £1500 for the rack and not sure how effective an after market rack would be (will there be any issue with the coding ?)

As SuperV8 said, has your garage actually said what the fault is? - a quick Google of the subject reveals that just a faulty steering angle sensor can give the issues you describe.

i took it to a place i never used before but were supposed to be a VW specialist they quoted me £1200 for the part and said it needed the steering rack although didnt supply a part number when i said i would try and source the part myself they also refused to supply me with any diagnostic codes that came up (as i am sure you can see why i wont be taking the car back there ) they also told me getting anything but the original part may affect the coding and i would have to pay for the coding regardless of if it works or not.

Aah, so it could be physically damaged, not just faulty? I'd be tempted as others have suggested previously to see if it can be rebuilt. There must be companies in the London area.

Bosch link both 5Q2423055L & 5Q2423051AP to their K S00 003 677 - so going by that I would say it should be ok.

hi guys abit of an update so i have had the replacement installed in the leon and the mechanic that did it tried coding it but didnt seem to work (using snap on computer and a vw program he has) so the steering rack is working fine but i now have lights and errors i am guessing due to lack of coding. i have attached the pictures. does anyone know of a good mobile vw specialist that has capability to code the rack with vw mainframes (if thats what it needs) for a good price and can get to wembley.
