Hi Guys,

Took my car out today to b'n'q parked up and then came out after doing some shopping, half way out the car park my engine light comes on on the dash and my car feels like it is shuddering when I accelerate and also when at a stand still. Lack of power as well. Am quite worried about this, anyone have any ideas what it might be?

Am driving a Leon Cupra R (05) with a stage 1 remap, k&n panel filter and forge recirculating dump valve

Probably coil pack failure... VAGCOM to confirm

does it feel like it misfiring? running on 3 cylinders?

if so coil pack as above.
£20 - £30 for a new one, (one on each cylinder and very easy diy job).

Many people carry a spare one, and many will say replace them all as if one goes it may be most are on way out.
- my advice would be buy two and keep one in the car, maybe even perhaps with tools needed.

Feel like what happened to my golf and it turned out it was only firing on 3 cylinders (sounded like a Scooby, lol). Probably is this but I'll need to get a machine plugged in to the car to confirm wont I?

VAG-COM isn't essential, but it's alot easier. It will tell you exactly which one is faulty, but the other way of checking is to unplug each pack one at a time, and see if the car gets worse. If the car doesn't get worse when you unplug one, that's the knackered one.

You're lucky you don't have the V5, that particular engine will run tickety-boo on 3 packs so trying to do the unplug trick to find the problem doesn't work!

Where is the coil pack located in the engine bay? How easy it to replace yourself? Any help on where I can get some instructions on how to this?

your running on less than the full complement of cylinders.
At least one spark plug is not operating so you will get unburnt fuel through the system, which isnt good for the cat.
So i would not recommend driving it.

Have you worked out which plug it is yet? you can get a new coil from any VAG dealer orGSF etc, although ive just seen the time and after lunchtime on a sat most are closed.

where abouts are you? many of us have spares... ;)

I live in Glasgow mate, I'm pretty sure most of the lads on here are from down south. I've taken the engine casing off and had a look and much to my dismay have come across a problem. 2 are easily accessible but 2 are underneath alot of tubing and a moulding that is going to my dump valve. I've taken some photo's (see below). Basically I'm not too confident on taking the thing off that is covering the two other plugs in case I monumentally **** something up.

Vagcom would probably be your safest option then, at least you will only have to remove one coil pack. I think you should figure out how to do it though, as coil packs are quite regular failures and you will be replacing others at some point.

your right, two you can get to easily with no tools, (although a small flat screw driver helps remove the electrical connection and also flat screw drivers are useful to ease up to coil..

Regards the other two, you dont need to undo any piping etc, from memory all you need to do is undo a nut / allen head or two then just hold them out of the way.
looks like if the two alen jey type bolts to the right of the oil filler cap in your first pic.
Honestly, it looks intimadating, but look again, you can move the pipes without undoing them after a few boltsnuts have been removed.
It may be one of the two thats easy to get to so easy peesy..

Thanks for your advice guys, it turns out it was nos 1 & 2 (the easy ones to get to) that had failed and the garage labour to do it was only £30 so I just got them to do. I do know now though how the coil packs are numbered and how to fix it myself so I'll be doing it myself from now on. Once I have some free cash I'm gonna buy a few spares because no doubt the other 2 will go sooner or later !

Dont go to a garage you dont need Vag com mate.

Start the car and remove the spark plugs one by one. When you find the plug which dosent **** the engine up even more when you remove it, replace that coil pack. 5 minute job, dont get charged garage prices for a job like that.

Cheers fella, thanks for the advice :)

Ive had them go before, but was under warrenty then so go them replace foc.

Is it an easy enough job for a novice then? Ive got an Ibiza FR, are they located under the engine cover?

Just trying to phone around now and see if i can actually get any to replace them with!

Does the FR have a turbo?

If so you'll have to move this bit that covers 2 of the coil packs, look at my pics above and you'll see. You'll need a set of allen keys to loosen this bracket thing that the turbo pipes are attached to but you dont need to disconnect any of the tubing (see comments above for that). Unless you can get it from an open seat garage you'll struggle to get replacements today !
