Hey guys,

Have a few questions as I'm a bit of a car noob. First off I've got the Seat Ibiza MK4 DAB (56 plate)

I'm looking at fitting an induction kit and I'm pretty sure I could do it myself, the only snag I have is the cold air intake. Where/how do you connect this to the induction kit if I was to get one of the cone ones.

Also any recommendations on which to buy?

Is there any gain/loss in power by doing so?

Cheers for your help guys

Aye it's a 1.4 DAB edition so it's got a few extra bhp - bumped up to 100 from the standard 1.4.

Have been looking at this. If I'm not mistaken I would just have to take off the engine cover, fit this and there's no need for a cold-air intake? In the description for the item it says "Sealed unit cold air intake"

(sorry for the shitty link, less than 15 posts still)

You wouldn't gain any power, or not enough to notice, you would gain a throaty noise, which is fun. I swear when I fitted one on a naturally aspirated car before it felt more snappy though, might just be the effect of the noise ^^ Is good fun though.

Are they easy to fit? I've seen a friend's before and he had a cold air intake however I'm not sure how I would hook that up. I know where the induction kit would be linked to, just not the cold air - thus the link I provided above which says "Sealed unit cold air intake" in the description

Yep, they are easy to fit. For starters those sealed unit cold intake filters won't give you that induction kit bellow like an open cone filter would. The cold feed is simply just a case of locating the pipe through the engine bay to a grille of sorts without hindering anything. That sealed piper one looks as though it has an end thats shouldered, people tend to use a wood drill and bore a hole in their bumpers and push the cold air feed through. Which personally I think is a bad idea if you go through a puddle, so the higher on the bumper better. Assuming the 1.4 intake is on the right side of the engine when looking straight at it, you can probably locate the intake feed down the right side of the battery box and to the front bumper. Hope that helps

So the cold air feed just needs to be a pipe that basically isn't in the engine bay, so sucking cold air from outside the car? The only bit I'm confused with now is how that's hooked up to the induction kit. I'm definitely wanting one with a nice bellow to it ;)

Sort of :S Its hard to explain without showing you, so I will attempt to show you..let me know if it makes sense :)

So the above image is just showing what a cold air feed looks like and where it is in relation to the open cone filter. As you can see it is right next to the filter so the intake benefits from the "cold air feed"

Engine1.jpg

The next image shows an open cone filter on a 1.9 tdi. As you can see one end of the cold air feed pipe connects from the original airbox inlet for cold air, and the other end is positioned just under the cone filter, this is great as it uses what is already there.

Another ibiza engine bay, again this picture shows the cold air feed pipe "silver pipe" coming from the upper vents of the bumper to being positioned just next to the cone filter.

You don't have to have a "real connection" for a cold air feed pipe, you just position it where you believe it is most beneficial and effective. And then normally, most people just hold them in to place with zip ties.

Personally I would try to connect it to the original air box inlet, or sat behind one of the upper grilles in the bumper. You can like I said previous bore a hole and use a flanged pipe in the bumper, I don't like these personally, as they are open to the elements and its easier for water to get in, especially if you are using a sealed cold air fed induction kit. Last thing you want is water in your engine.

The sealed units work in a similar way, the cold air feed pipe is just connected to the filter housing instead, but you still have to position the pipe in order to get a cold air feed. As shown in the picture above. But like I said sealed filter units do not give you that bellowing noise that an open cone filter does, so I would go for an open cone filter if that's what you want.

Last picture is showing a flanged cold air feed pipe bored through a bumper.

Pictures are compliments of google images! But believe most are from this forum, so thanks whoever they are!

Hope that helps mate!

Ah thanks so much that totally clears it up for me. I've had a look at induction kits and figured you had to connect the cold air intake along the induction kit pipe somehow.

So all I really need to do is take off the engine cover, connect the induction kit then get the cold air pipe and run it as high up and with as much access to cold air as I can, then have the other end of that as close to the induction kit as possible? I think I finally get it! :)

Cheers again dude!

Looks like you have pretty much got it mate! Try to position the cold air feed pipe a few cm's away from the filter though like in the first picture, it allows the filter to benefit from the cold air than it just being concentrated on one place on the filter.

Glad I could help :)

Aye I see what you mean. Is it best to have it positioned to the side of the cone or 'head on' if you know what I mean?

Edit - Also I've had the engine cover off before and there's the connection for fitting the induction kit to, at the back of the engine bay as you're looking at it, but there's also a smaller one at the front - closer to the front bumper. I assume I need to do something with that as it's left open to the elements without any extra stuff on it

It depends really, if the front of the cone filter is blanked off, position it to its side, but if it is open at the front like the picture below, it shouldn't matter too much where you position it as long as it is near the filter. In some applications you may have no choice where you position your cold air feed, but it'll still make a different if its in range of the filter :D

Right okay, think I know the one you mean. Is it the one in the picture below?

If it is, get rid of it/blank it off/don't use it. It is a pipe that is connected to the manifold heat shield, it actually acts as a hot air feed, so basically restricts your engine :D I think the manufacturers put it in to keep air:fuel mixtures down for emissions.

Also I found this link, induction kits and cold air feeds for 1.4's, should give you some ideas and help to what you want to do :)

I'll get a photo for you in the morning - car's parked about a mile away because the ****ing footies on so all the spaces outside my flat are takes

That's not the same pipe as I've seen when I've taken the cover off. Like I say I'll get a photo for you tomorrow and see if you can give me some advice. Once again cheers dude you've cleared up a lot for a nooby like me :)

Haha no worries :) Got a feeling it is your engine breather, never seen a 1.4 ibiza engine in person before, but will give it a good crack from any picture you take.

Not a problem mate, I enjoy helping :) (btw think you need 15 posts or something before you can send a picture url, so just post a random message, haha)

Yeah haha he is right. That bellowing noise you are going to get will make that right foot heavy aswell :p

If its what you want go for it though, I got an induction kit and haven't looked back. I have a 1.8t and love hearing my turbo spool :)

Air Intake

hey,

I have a mk4 ibiza and my air filter is built into my engine cover, i've looked and there seems to be no intake pipe, is it bad that its sucking in air from my engine bay??

That's odd, can you take a picture? Which intake pipe do you mean? from throttle body to air box or from the air box to the front of the car? If its the latter it is not ideal on a naturally aspirated car as you will get heat soak, but it won't damage the engine, it will just reduce your performance/economy. You may however not even notice a difference, as enough cold air might be getting in :)

Yo sorry it took a bit to get back to the thread - been getting shafted with hours at work :p

Got some photo's of the inside of the engine and a few questions.

h7strFY.jpg

Just a photo of the engine bay as is currently.

The red circle shows the air intake where I would fit the induction kit to. The blue shows a connection to the engine which I'm not sure what I'd do with if I were to fit an induction kit. Can I just leave it? Or does it need something hooked up to it. In the standard car with the engine cover on there it's connected to the cover. That's my main confusion atm.

Close up of the air intake.

Close up of the previously blue circled bit. Thought I'd give you guys a closer look to see if you know what it is.

Finally this tube connects the engine bay cover to some part of the engine. As you can probably tell I'm a noob when it comes to cars so I really don't know what to do with this. Obviously if I was to take to off the cover completely that would need to be connected to something? Or am I totally wrong here. You can also see it in the second photo where I've taken the cover off and moved it to the left.

Once again any help you guys can give me is much appreciated.
