I have a 2.0 TDI sport Altea (BKD engine - 55 plate)... which I've had for approx 5 months.

As far as i remember, it always sounds like a police siren when accelerating/decelerating... i.e. the turbo spools up and down.

I'd expect this a little, but it seems to do it between 1k and 2k rpm more then anywhere else in the rev range.

2 questions:

1) Should the turbo be spooling up so early?
2) Should it be sounding like a police siren?

Thoughts and comments more then welcome!

I have a asytra 1.9cdti 150bhp. And mine has started making the police siren noise. I been told the thrust bearing has gone. I also have near enough no power below 2k revs. SHould be getting it replaced under warranty. turbos should make a whistle noise but not a siren.

My old MG ZR 1.4 used to do it when you popped it in first and used the engine to slow yourself, it was pretty cool.

New 1.6CRTDi Ibiza does something similar, but not quite as obvious... according to my girlfriend. :p

I had my turbo recondition on my MK1 Leon 110 about 2 months back. Ever since I got it back, its been making more of a droning noise, low pitch police siren.
Apparently they say its normal? Im pretty sure the noise wasnt there before it got recon'd.

Should I take it back and get it looked at, incase of it being a bearing? Or is it normal?

Took it in to Seat, they had a look over it and came back with "noisy turbo" on the invoice... not broken yet, but apparently will break in a few years... go figure...

So will just leave it be for now...

I have the same thing on mines too. Had the turbo checked out at Awesome GTI and they said the turbo is fine and working ok. I wonder if its a loose or split pipe somewhere as well.

when i turbo starts making a police car sound its on its way out. the bearings have gone. its only a matter of time. get it booked in

The police siren sort of sound comes from moving air in the boost pipes etc, nothing to worry about IMO but maybe a small boost leak.

Turn on your hoover and put your fingers over the end and see what sort of noises you can make, none of these noises will be bearing noises

This sounds like the famous Owl Noise as mentioned in many posts on here. My 56 plate 2.0TDI BKD has this, the dealer says it's acceptable and normal (as they do). Got used to it now, it disappears above 1500 rpm.

Had this noise coming from my PD150 for the last few months. As you rev the engine the whistle gets louder until about 1900 rpm.

About a month ago the turbo blew up!!! The shaft in the turbo snapped due to one of the bearings seizing, this completly destroyed the turbo. Luckily no engine damage but £1500 to replace the turbo, gaskets, etc.

IF IT IS MAKING THE POLICE SIREN NOISE OR ANYTHING UNUSUAL GET IT CHECKED BY A TURBO SPECIALIST

Jabbasport repaired mine. Very highly recommended, TOP GUYS

Well mines been going now for over 8k with the police siren noise.

AwesomeGTI shoved a camera inside the turbo to see the internals and reported no problems with shaft play or damaged vains........so god knows!

They did the same with mines as well and came back with the same findings as you. Like I said previously it might be a split hose somewhere or a barely loose pipe.

ye, i am thinking now that mine may have been a boost leak as i have just had a custom map and they told me that i had a boost leak lol!

i think if the vains are going, the turbo seems to pull (boost) twice - once at the same time of normal, then a small extra boost at about 3.5k as the vains open more! - well mine did anyway!
