Changed spark plugs today and the old ones look like this, is this a problem ?

Did recently overfill the oil (re the above link) so might this be the cause ? Picture in the link does not show the top of the plugs so unsure if this is what they are talking about. I suppose if i give it another few hundred miles and then check the new ones to see if problem still occouring or as anybody else got any ideas ?

I've got an idea or two...

Firstly, is plug 3 directly below the filler hole in the rocker box cover? If so, you might of spilt a bit of oil and its run down and onto the plug?

The only other thing I could think of is blow past of exhaust gasses past the plug due to the plug not being fully tightened?

How many miles on the engine? Do you do a lot of short journeys?

HTH

No the worst plug would have been the second or third from the left (cant remember). It has 58000 on the clock and normally i do 12 mile runs to work and back each day, dont know if this is classed as short or not.
All the plugs seemed quite tight, changed them when engine was still pretty hot, could this be it ?

Oh, depends on if they are 12 miles stop start or 12 miles at 60 mph to be honest. If they are stop start then they would foul up a bit.

The temp shouldn't affect the colour to be honest, all 4 look pretty equally burnt on the spark end so could be oil seeping past the valve stem oil seals? The best check for that would be a compression test, but, if its using less than 1 litre per 1000 miles things are ok and you would be best leaving it alone.

The 12 miles is pretty constant speed at around 50-60 and oil isnt dropping at all really or nothing thats noticeable.
200 mile journey tommorrow so will check it over after that.
Any idea on roughly how much compression testing costs ?

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Off the top of my head no, but, should only be a few quid as its a relatively simple job and would take no more than 15 mins - 30 mins tops to do.

Does it blow any clouds on start up? If so that usually points to valve stem oil seals. If it blows smoke on acceleration or lifting off when warm that usually means blow past the rings. The advantage (as someone put it to me) of blow past the rings is at least you can be sure that the cylinders are getting oiled.

Well after my 200 mile journey yesterday i checked the plugs again and they seem ok. Booted it a couple of times, no smoking at all. Will check again in a few weeks to see how they look.

Are you sure it is oil and not an over-rich fuel mixture? Air filter OK? Difficult to tell exactly from the picture but they look dry to me.

Taking the plugs out when it has been running on the choke and they might be wet with unburnt fuel. Though if you changed them when the engine was warmed up this is unlikely.

k&n filter (re-oiled about 7000 miles ago). Runs well and had 39.7 mpg yesterday using mainly cruise control at around 75mph.

I wonder if thats the answer???

K&N's are notorious for wiping out Air Flow Meters, which would ruin the mixture, which could cause over fuelling, which could cause what you show in your piccys.

I dont have an air flow meter on mine or thats what i'm told after looking for it for ages and checking vagcat ! Can anybody enlighten me on this please.
When looking at my air system on vagcat the Toledo ABF engine listed does not look like mine so i had a look at the Ibiza version (1998) ABF engine (http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/se/IB/1998/242/49/4686433/) and mine is the version without the air flow meter, it usese the bottom type of air hose (12a).
