Did a quick search but couldn't find anything about this...

My missus made a compilation CD for our drive down to Somerset on Saturday & I happened to notice the CD was on track 23! Normally a CD has about 12 tracks so I asked how she managed to get so many on a disc... she said they were MP3's copied from her MP3 player.

I didn't know the standard head unit recognised MP3's :hide: lol

When it comes to Computers & Audio equipment all I know is how to turn them on and off... anything else is far too technical for me! Only just figured out how to get the track numbers to show on the display! :hide:

Guess I'll have to invest in a proper MP3 player type head unit... are they expensive?? Never really been interested in ICE - no idea what's what or how much they are...

Wouldn't mind something for long journeys though - without having to sacrifice my glovebox.

Can you get head units to play MP3 discs? What's the difference between an MP3 disc and an audio one? Is it a different disc entirely, or just the tracks in a different format?

Sorry about all the questions - I really haven't got a clue! :p lol
 
MP3 is a compressed format so requires a headunit that can deocde it.
These are readily available now. And at reasonable prices. Depeding on what you want to go for.

Audio CD works on time - longest disc you can get is 80mins.
MP3 CD works on data size - so depending on quality - but will allow 700mb on a standard cd. Working on 4mb a track - you do the maths.
 
I have a few mp3's that have eleventy-thirteen hundreds of tracks.. most have about ten albums or so.. one Ive been killing to death recently is about 5 1/2 hours of trance/dance mix's all on the one cd. really need to do a couple more ready for the summer especially with GTI inters coming up etc...
 
I run an Alpine HU with the latest iPod connector and, IMO, it's a hard to beat package. Sounds great, all the track info etc is transfered to the HU display and it charges as well. Can't ask for much more than that.
 
I slag off my Ipod, I definetly dont slag off my Becker Cascade - it's a quality piece of kit.

Ipod isnt too bad, I just feel that mp3 player wise you can get better value than an ipod. But needed the Ipod for the stereo compatibility.

Yeah, Apple kinda cornered the market on the connection front unless you go for the line in option.

Those Beckers are nice and look more OEM than my HU.
 
I want a new HU i dont like only fitting 25 tracks on a cd. You can get dvd ones now where you fit 4.5 gigs of mp3s on a disk which i think is a better solution than the ipod.

Mostly because if i leave the dvd in the car it wont get nicked whereas an ipod will and is fiddley.

:no: You need a HU that reads directly from your mp3 player to show the track date. The Aura HU doesnt have the capability to do this.

What some of them have been on about is something like this http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alp...1.html?cadid=9671e4f69210eac97c4ef986be8c9522 which reads directly from your ipod and can be controlled by the HU instead of the ipod. I was tempted to order that particular HU, but i dont think i could live without being able to put in an CD i'd just bought.

I wouldnt say it WILL get nicked.

You get much better control over an Ipod than you do an MP3 dvd or cd.
If you get a decent headunit you can basically have full control over any of the Ipod functions.

With the CD option at least (no experience with DVD headunits) its fine to have say 150 tracks but difficult to find one in particular - other than scrolling through the entire cd.

Ipod allows you to set up playlists, play a certain genre, select an album or artist, etc.

It isnt fiddly at all, one extra lead to put in when you have the headunit installed.

That Alpine unit looks horrible. Try and pick up a Becker with Ipod lead off ebay, its got the looks, and you can get one to match the red in dash illumination. You know it makes sense ;)

Very pricey, but looks cheap and horrible - i like my flashing lights :D

Think i'll be happy for a while anyway, i only ordered a Macally FM Cup for my i-pod the other day, so thatll last me a while yet.

I didnt pay that much for mine though.

Dont think it looks cheap and horrible, rather have something subtle with performance than something that looks like it should be sat on a Christmas tree :lol: :lol:

How anybody can say a Becker looks cheap and horrible is beyond me! They are very solid, nicely finished, under-stated units. They look perfect in the Leon dash and don't scream 'Look at me!' at anybody that notices it.

Flashy lights should be left to Christmas trees. Car Audio is about sound, and there is little better out there than Becker without spending silly amounts of money!
