Temperature Sensor

Fault Code:

17704 - Error in Mapped Cooling System (usually temp Sensor or Thermostat)
P1296 - 35-00 - -

I Know the usual answer for solving this fault code,
"replace the temperature sensor to the green top sensor, -you probably have the black top one!"

I Have read plenty of post's on this site to do with this fault! But they all point in the same direction of changing the sensor!!

My problem is that I have replaced the sensor twice now once with a genuine part and the code came back a couple of weeks later, so then i replaced it with a non genuine part and that gave the same result!

The problem now is that the engine light is coming on every week or so, and all im doing is using vag-com to clear the code every time! -getting annoying now, and need a solution!

The car is sitting on around 114K and will be due it's second cam belt change at about 120K So i am wondering if it could be linked to a knackered water pump not pumping the water past the sensor quick enough!! I might be completely off the mark with that thought though! Or is it simply the thermostat as it says on the fault code!

Any help would be appreciated!

I Believe it is the only temperature sensor, however i may be wrong! - please advise!!

I Have plugged vag-com into the car and took it for a rasp! The temperature on vag seems to folow the guage! Which does seem to please itself where it sits! - mainly right down low! - This was the original reason why i changed the sensor when the light came on and i got that code! But it didn't cure either problem!!

Thanks for reply. I've not really noticed whether it goes down when driving as it seems to pleases itself where the guage sits! However the other day i was driving it and noticed it was sitting where it should be at 90 degrees and as i went around a corner it drpooed right off to 0 again ! - iv'e got a feeling it has occured a few times!! - seems strange! Maybe I'll get a new thermostat and try that next then!!

Cheers adam!

I Was thinking along the same lines of doing the cam belt, water pump, and thermostat early for those exact reasons!! sounds like the better way rather than doing it in bits!!

cheers for the relply

Hello,
I have a Seat Leon 1.6 SX 2005 05 plate and I had the flashing light coming on every morning so after looking on forum and speaking to a mechanic I changed the temperature sensor, it had a green one fitted and changed it for a new green one which took a 5/10min job. The light is still flashing and I have to restarting the engine about 2-4 times each morning before it stops. I have noticed comments about restarting the ECU, should this be done? Any other advice?

Open your bonnet and it's behind the washer bottle you fill for the windscreen, should have a blue twist off lid.
Check it when the engine is cold.

you'll have to let me know the outcome when you've been to the garage, i'd be interested to find out if it is the thermostat!!
