I recently bought a 2006 leon tdi and since I got it it has been the garage 2 times with a problem with temperature warning light. When I was driving the car the warning sounded and light came on I stopped and checked the coolant level and it was showing as empty and when I checked about half hour later it was way above max. Anyone else experienced this or am I on my own? Is the the head gasket going or something less serious?

The same warning light comes on in my car but happens very randomly, has been through the garage to check it out but couldn't find anything wrong, mine is 2005 mk1 model

there is a common issue when its cold, due to the coolant level dropping a little and people get a red light and 3 beeps... easy fix is to top up a bit.
However, when this happens it doesnt drop right down like has been explained in this case.

Sounds like a potential airlock to me. any signs of leaking?
temperature ok when driving?

I would go with what andycupra said, it sounds like it could be an airlock if you ar not loosing any fluid.

Water pump

According to the garage the water bottle and the thermostat were replaced last week when it went into the garage last week. I just hope this is not a sign of things to come. Also I checked the oil and the steam coming out of it was like a kettle boiling and that was just the dipstick

Mine does it when cold in the morning. I tried topping up as suggested by the garage but it still does it. I might ask them to replace the sensor when it's next in for a service. That will be when it's a bit warmer (hopefully!) though so I won't find out if it's worked til next winter lol!

Temperature gauge fault

Got the car back today after a week. Garage spent £800 on getting the head gasket repaired and pressure tested. Thank god I did not have to pay for that just hope that solves the problem.
