Now I'm quite willing to be proved wrong here, but I'd reckon that VAG would not have a clue which cars left the factory with the updated ARBs especially cars built close to the change point, I do realise that there is meant to be a formal POE of any changes and the parts listings usually do list "for chassis up to" and "for chassis from", but in this case I do not think that it was ever that clear. One thing is true though, if any VAG dealer checked your VIN then they would find out which PR-codes were included in the build of that car, and that would include the ARB diameter - but that size is generic for a range of engines and does not answer the question "has it got the old or new type ARB fitted" - and that is correct information that you will need to let you buy in the right ARB bushes.

Even with an F1 active search they usually list all the anti roll bars on ETKA, you have to measure it first (easy to do if you have a few spanners handy, just slip one over). I'm pretty sure even up to 7 chassis at least they were still fitting the old type of arb to new cars. 9 chassis onwards they have changed to the new type of subframe and binned consoles all together.

I've got a mix of Cupra and poly bushes up front, just standard on front ARB, feels nice and stiff. The car is going in to have Powerflex put into the rear beam tomorrow, me and my mates attempted to do this last weekend and failed..basically you need a press to get the rear beam ones out and put the new ones in or you just mash them up.

Hammer and chisel to get the old ones out, Powerflex ones much easier to get in, bit of lube and a long bolt with two large washers/plates.

I'd reckon so, that turns into all "new style" Ibiza + Polo + Fabia - now that turns the clock back about eight years - what a success!

Remember that " 9 chassis" is model year build 2009.

Probably expensive to do but would the new subframe retrofit on to a Mk4 ?
Anyone got any pics or an exploded diagram of the new subframe

is there anyway I can reach the ARB to do the magnet test? where would I check?

At the outer ends just before they crank round into the "U" shape - remember that the pipeclamps that hold the ARB to the chassis (where these bushes are) is steel so avoid touching that with your magnet or you might get the wrong answer if old ARB is old style. Maybe I'm being a bit annal here - all checking this out will do will be to save you going back and buying a second set of bushes.

You will see the end stop as on each side they are "outboard" of the ARB's pipe clamps - just like a ridge or ring on the ARB but hard up against the ARB at the clamping(mounting) points.

As Techie said, and I remembered this on the bus this morning (!?!), at least on my oldish ETOS parts listing, the original bush is listed against the correct (PR) option code - that is correct and allows for the replacement of a worn bush on a servicable old style ARB - THEN, the replacement new style ARBs are listed against the (PR) option code - THEN - the new bush sizes to suit these new ARBs are listed with referance to the new ARB part numbers - there is now (even at that time of "publishing" that ETOS listing) no listing for a replacement old style ARB as by then they were history so correctly deleted - ie dealer stocks should have been disposed of (in some cases via Ebay traders after people buying up NOS of VAG parts).

Get 16mm ARB bushes. Lemfoerder items are less than £5 each from VAGSpares.
For console bushes use the Cupra items.
The standard front wishbone bushes are VERY hard and seldom need changing. It you do want to change then fit standard item, Powerflex is a waste of money in this appication.
The ARB bushes are easy to change and can be done as part of the console bush job. They will not alter your ride or handling, its just preventative maintenance. A worn ARB leads to a knocking from under the front when going over bumps.

well, I just got the cupra bushes yesterday from Seat. Willl have them fitted on saturday and see if it cures any of the problems. Its too late for me to order the arb bushes for saturday now so will have to get it done some other time. by the way, should i have the standard arb bushes fitted? I guess the garage would have these in stock?

well, got the cupra bushes fitted and the ride feels stiffer. However, it doesn't seem to have cured any of the knocking and rattling sounds. I've actually got another problem now. when driving, I can hear like a grinding sound from the left front wheel. Will be taking it back to have it checked out.

I guess I'll have to try other suggestions to fix it.

But at least you have tightened up the turn-in and the front wheels will stay where they are meant to be - so that is good!

Noise from front wheel after garage worked on car - this could be no more than a stone stuck in the calliper or behind the shield - ie coincidence - or they have bent the disc shield back a bit accidentally! I fitted a full set of steel wheels and winter tyres to my wife's Polo on Saturday, then went for a run to check that they were okay, after a couple of miles one front wheel started to make a lot of noise - so I thought "have I left a wheel loose" - stopped to look - nothing wrong - moved off - no noise - wife has used the car for a couple of days now and its still in one piece although she can now drive up steep snow and iced up roads - which she could not when the Pilot Exaltos were on!

on tuesday started getting some more weird noises from the front of the car.
Everytime I move off there is a creaking sound coming from the front and feels like the front is about to drop.
only makes the sound when moving off and also seems like its a little harder to get the car moving forward.

any ideas?

You sure the break is coming from the front? That sounds like typical sticky rear caliper syndrome

100% coming from the front and now making noise more often even while am driving. If I stop, and turn my steering in any direction, i can hear the noise much more clearly

do you mean the wishbone bushes? I didn't have the arb bushes replaced

Then i'm pretty sure it will be the arb bushes being noisy, shame you didnt have them done as its part of the same job which is why I normally change them at the same time.

Update:

Took my car in on Monday to a VW specialist here in Leicester.
They put the car up on the ramp to see whats wrong and told me that the wishbone bushes seem damaged and loose. I asked to have a look, they showed me and I could clearly see that it was loose and would be spining while driving.

So I booked my car in for Wednesday to have these replaced with the cupra ones again and I also told them to do the ARB with bushes and droplinks at the same time.
They told me that it may not be necessary to replace the ARB and bushes but droplinks may be as they seem to fail.
But I told them to do it anyway as I wanted to make sure everythng was done.

They took the car on Wednesday morning at 9am and called me at 1pm telling me that they have stripped the car and have found further damage and it must be sorted. They explained a few things which I didn't understand much of but the main thing was that the control arm or something where the bushes go was bent. So I told them to sort it out. They said that the car could only be ready for Thursday though as the parts would need to be ordered in.

So went their on Thursday and the car felt new, the steering and smoothness was amazing.

But then the bill:

Anti-Roll Bar: £40.51
Stabilzer Link Rod: £22.18 * 2
ARB Mount Clip: £1.66 * 2
ARB Mounts: £2.56 * 2
#Bracket: £75.67
#Bracket: £75.67
#Lower Track Control Arm: £30.42 * 2
Bolt Hex HD: £2.95 * 2
Drive Shaft Nut: £2.96
Labour = £45 * 3Hrs

Total = £449.35 + £78.64VAT = £527.99.

#Additional parts to what I was expecting from my visit

Well i was expecting £300 initially but ofcourse the additional parts and labout pushed it was expected.

I must say that it has sorted things out though.
Oh, and i haven't got the cupra bushes as the standard ones already came pressed in and they asked me if I still wanted them when they called. As they offered a 2 year warranty on it, I said to keep the standard ones as the cupra ones was too much vibration for my liking.

I've got the part numbers on my invoice and they start with 6Q, I thought Ibiza parts were 6L. Is 6Q for the fabia? they did say that few parts may be from other VW cars but they are the same but could be cheaper.

Well thanks for all the help everyone
