yesterday
Hi,

Just been washing the cars and doing a normal check over the normal area's. I got to the oil cap of the misses 8v and ...oh no...Mayonnaise . I only checked it 2 weeks ago and it was fine. There is no smoke out the exhaust, it doesnt over heat ( never ever ) the water level is fine, the oil level is fine and the oil looks an ok colour....and the heater works ok...plus it was only serviced by a garage about 800 miles ago.

Now i have had a read through the search and it would seem that the cold weather doesnt help things and where i live has been dropping to -7 at night. The car is used every day by my misses but its only 3 miles to her work and for the rest of the day its just sitting there.

Am i over looking anything ?...How worried should I be ?

Very likely the short journeys and cold weather. My old Polo used to get mayo in the winter all the time and never had any head gasket problems and that was used similarly.

Its no problem at all, just take it for a very good blast to get it all heated up and it'll go away.

My mum did 40000 in her MK4 polo with it there constantly due to the fact she only did 10 miles a day, when i inherited it i did longer journeys and it went away

I think it would help massively mate. The thing is its got a pipercross viper induction kit on it and the thing just sucks and sucks. As soon as it gets warmed up you put your foot down on a nice bit of road and just watch the Thermo fall.

Ive always thought that was a good thing but now I am not so sure ?

what ur pipercross sucks all ur hot air from the water? think somethings dodgy there. i have mayo in my breather pipe and on oil fillercap hope its just coz i need a service

Just removed a ton of hellmans from mine. The importance of good maintenance and regular oil changes has been made clear to me.

Brought the car back in June and came 'serviced' i use this lightly, had car troubles over christmas and hit it hard. Funny enough this wasnt the problem but had to be dealt with along the way. Such a relief to clean all the breather system, have new oil, plugs and have all my sensors cleaned (and one replaced). Will be regularly checking these pipes and also changing my dizzy cap/rotor every year. You dont even want to know the state of that!

dont worry about it at all, seems to be a common thing on the 8v my mk2 1.4 did it and still does! its just moisture reacting with oil due to it being so cold at the moment

Mine on my 16v was nobodies fault but my own not really fair for me to blame the engine. Putting off a service caused that mess and boy did i have to sort it out.

i took the 8v out for a good run tonight ( and even had a bit of fun with one of those astra 1.9 tdci things - they are soooo slow )

i think i am going to start driving it to work a few days a week to give it a run and to take some miles off my 16v

As quoted. Hot air on a cold surface..

Short and cold journies contribute to this alot. I checked mine yesterday and its the same as your description. Hot air rises to the highest point it which in this case is the bottom of the filler cap. Just a mixture of oil and water.

It is a common occurance with Mk2 Golf's and Polo's of the same age

After cleaning my system a few weeks ago (pictures shown previously in thread) i thought i would have a cheeky look to make sure everything was fine. To my shock the pipework looks exactley the same as it did before i cleaned it. Just two weeks and its full of mayonnaise.....again!

epic bummer, i never checked at the weekend as had just finished cleaning and was late for the bassetts pole meet...will check tonight !
