Hi all,

Looking for a bit of advice/experience:

Is changing the timing belt on a 99 2L AGG engine a realistic DIY job?
Are there any specialist tools required?

I'd like to be able to pay for someone else to do it but I've been quoted £270 - £320 which is a bit much at the minute!

its not a paticularly hard job in general cars(havent done any petrol VW engines) but its a bit of a burden when you think that if your one single tooth out or its not tight enough/too tight then its a new engine job
 
I haven't looked yet but I'll see what the Haynes Manual has to say.

Its the tightness/alignment thats the worry! - Aren't there specific tools to help?

Only bugger on that engine is that it has the secondary pulley for distributor and oil pump. Means you have to check timming marks on that too.

Appart from that, easy enough.
 
Andy did mine when he owned it. I don't think he found it too difficult. I've had the car a year now and (touchwood!) it's fine. Sure he's posted about it before.
 
yup, 2 hour job ;) it was the 1st cambelt I had done, so took it very slowly, and used Haynes as the bible ;)

it's just a case of triple checking the timing markings at every stage, and especially when it's all back together again before you crank it over !! :lol:
 
2 hrs!! thats quicker than I would of thought!

No specialist tools required then?

In terms of parts what will I need:

Cambelt
Water pump (Is it the brass impeller version req.)
Belt tensioner
Coolant
Aux belt

Are there any bolts fixing that I can anticipate destroying!

Blowing the dust off this thread!

A know of a SEAT mechanic that will do the work for me (In his own time at my home) if I supply all the parts!

What's a reasonable charge to do this? Approx how long should it take him?

i was told the cam belt kit which included all the above ^^was £62.50.. i got a quote from a kwik fit garage for £140 for the lot and fitted.. say £35 an hour maybe 2 hours

then £1400 to replace the engine they f*cked
 
piece of piece, as formentioned only thing that is trickyish is keeping the dizzy/oil pump pulley in time as this bad boy is easily moved. did my 8v nearly 2 years ago and thats still rolling :)
