OK...I've bought the tool for releasing the strut from the hub, but is there a special tool to help undo the top mounting nut ?

Are they an outer nut with a hex socket in the end of the damper rod ?
If so I've learnt my lesson before - a socket held as tightly as possible with molegrips and an allen key through the middle is a bit of a pain in the arse...

I suspect there is a proper tool to do this on the Mk4 ? Any part nos or links ?

Muddy, on a recent job on a Mk3 Golf with it's original and rusted up top nuts a cheap 12V impact wheel nut gun got me out of trouble, mole's and a large stilson were useless

impact guns are a last resort.

7mm allen key & a sparkplug socket works for me.

however - removing the strut out of the bottom of the hub is harder work.

Hadn't though of a sparkplug socket - presumably one with flats on that you can grip with a spanner...
Do you know what size fits the Mk4 strut top nuts m0rk ?

Just remember not to clamp the strut piston with molegrips or anything else for that matter as if it scrathes or scores it then the scratch or score will break the seals and then the oil will leak out and the shocks will be shagged.
