Best thing to use is a piece of thick stiff foam or sponge.
i actually cut a piece so it fits into the buckety bit on my back seats and it also doesn't feck up my leather. Sponge doesn't slip like a blanket or towel does so is a bit safer

you can get that foam stuff from most markets / furnishing places.

Just as a point, If you both drive, its not gonna make a whole lot of difference.

Travel systems are pants IMHO.
The car seat is there to keep Jnr safe in the car, the child should only be in them or an hour (2 at the most) at a time.
An infant should be laid flat not crunched up in a car seat when being pushed around the shops etc.
That is why we went for the Britax Iso-fix and a Jane powertrak 360, the car seat for in the car, the pram when not in the car!

The only thing we found the travel system useful for is if they are really little and asleep and you're going shopping on your own you clip the car seat out and drop it into the special trolleys they have at asda now.

We use a britax one (can't remember the name) but it fits in a shed load of cars properly as its designed to fit without risk of buckle crunch (where the car seat mangles the seat belt buckle in a crash and sends it spinning accross the car) - The one we have does both front and rear facing - IMO thats the most important thing is don't have them front facing too early as you don't have to have a crash, just harsh braking and their head will fly forward.
