No, these are not even designed specifically for the CR170 - just a 2.0 TDI. CR/PD/105/140/170

I asked a bunch of questions, and no answers were forthcoming. Which is a shame.

Generic CR170 remap it will have to be. But these I hoped would be the answer

you arn't listening, gerneric cr170 will be the same as a tuning box for the 2.0tdi with say the rotary set to 6 or 7

At least the remap will have been designed for the car in question. They're not an arbitrary hop up.

These are not.

I hoped the 'digital' aspect of the tuning box had some rpm / load based logic in there, but it is just a complicated op-amp

The instructions look badly translated, so I'll assume they're made elsewhere by others & rebranded hence the total lack of answers to the questions

Haha just a happy customer

Have a look on the TMC website

Fitting does look a little tricky but realistically it's pretty simple, can do mine in less than 10 mins now :) Fitting guide I did.

Mine was applied to my Fabia vRS 1.4 TSi, it's a 2011 plate car and it doesn't seem to be causing any damage or problems (TOUCH WOOD!!!).

I posted the below on my RR thread, it's from another customer of TMC :

Jetta 1.4 Tsi (160hp)
Before: 165hp, 225nm
After: 192hp, 260nm
Gain: +27hp, +35nm

**These readings were taken at DKC Jidousha (Blk 9002 Tampines Street 93, Industrial Park A #01-66. Singapore 528836), using a rolling road dyno. Please multiply all readings by factor of 1.2 to find engine power.**

Cheers for the Advice guys - seems I have sparked a war between re-maps and tuning boxes. I'd lvoe to do an ECU re-map professionaly but it instantly voids my warrenty. And from what I have gathered on this thread there isn't one for my car yet anyway.

Plus - I just wanted to experience really. £300 for the TMC seems a lot but then again I'll only ever put Pirelli P7's on my car and only let them get to 2mil and then replace them. (it's all about quality with me I guess, you get what you give?)

I don't mind paying for the TMC tuning box but if there's not much difference (apart from if what GazEP3 said about damage to the engine/components?) I wouldn't mind giving it a try. Obviously I don't want to damage my car though!!

I am really torn on what to do. What should I do people?

So you are aware, I do think a generic/custom remap done by a reputable dealer is the best solution.

I don't know what damage a box could do to the car. From knowing people that have had them I don't know anyone yet that has had a problem with their car using a tuning box.

Do whatever you feel is right to do, if you are worried don't do it.

You didn't spark any war of words between remap and tuning boxes.... thats an old chestnut on here, mate ;) lol

For what its worth I would happily get a tuning box from a reputable company in the absence of a map for the ECU. Not heard of any disasters caused by them.

Also dealers increasingly seem to be looking out for remapped ECUs. The beauty of a tuning box is that you can remove it before taking the car in for any work. The dealer will be completely unaware that the engine had ever been tweaked. ;)

Trouble is AFAIK there is no alternative to a tuning box currently for either the 1.6TDI or 1.2TSI engines. Its either wait for a (possibly) long time for someone to crack the ECU or buy a box and get instant gains... You could always sell the tuning box when a remap becomes available. ;)

Also so far I haven't heard any horror stories surrounding tuning boxes from well known reputable companies. I would personally steer clear of unknown companies selling generic tuning boxes on auction sites, though...

And at the price that fleabay company is selling the box, I'd happily just accept that nice lady with the plastic wobbly bits and they can keep the box! Lol :p

Plastic wobbly bits all round for me please :p

Doesn't actually say what car the OP has. Regardless, I'm a firm believer in doing things properly, plugging in a plastic box doesn't do it for me and I'm still a bit dubious about tuning boxes no matter who's selling them. I suppose if you're stuck though and it wasn't too dear there's no harm in giving it a try

VRSLOZ my shiny new TMC box appeared in the post today (I ordered it yesterday!). I even got a bag of mini eggs too! Needless to say they didn't last very long :D

I will be fitting it within the hour so I will upload pictures and post my feedback on the chip :p

Cheers for all the help people!

If we end up with an FR 1.2TSi ST I will deffo fit a TMC box. Fitted a few decent boxes to various cars and never had an issue, nice to see some decent ones for turbo petrols. My current FR TSi 211 has more than enough omph for me even though they do a box to up mine to 244Bhp which is only slightly less than Superchips Bluefin.

Looking forward to it mate!

Mine made 211.6bhp with the ITG kit as well :

rollingroadbhpgraph.jpg

211.6 WITH ITG kit as well?...would've thought you would've got abit more than that. On their website, it says its gives around 220. I dont know much about tuning boxes or remaps, just asking out of curiosity :)..but I am tempted to buy a TMC box

Yeah with the ITG kit bud.

I think the 220bhp given is using the best fuel in the best environment for the car. It's a good piece of kit still :)

So what are the benefits of the ITG kit VRSLOZ?

And when I get home today I shall post some pictures of my amazing fitting abilities haha!

The best part, my insurance staid the same :) They were like "Cool, anything else?".

But yes very noticeable. So am I correct in assuming these boxes are pretty generic... E.g. my current one could be transferred to my Cupra if I get one...? It still plugs into the same three sensors and just fools them? They mention on the TMC site they test it for each engine.... But that it's "Transferable to your next car" so this must mean as long as it utilizes forced induction with boost control etc it should slot right in... No need for different firmware?

And as I recently posted about the new Ibiza Cupra, if it's DSG only I may have to look else where as a Leon Cupra is too big :( I did look @ Mazda 3 MPS (2.3 Litre Turbo) but I want the twin charger engine of the Ibiza Cupra.. It sounds LOVELY!

Just thought i'd let you know about my experience with TMC, I got a box off ebay for £50 for a 1.4tsi fabia, and wanted to fit it to my Cupra. So contacted TMC and they said if I sent it to them they would check it for me. I sent it to them and they reset it for and sent it back for free. Excellent service. Have now got it fitted, definately more power and if driven reasonably a couple of more mpg. Also easily removed for service/warranty issues. So definately seems to be able to be adapted to other cars.

In the box that I got from ebay, the installation instructions that came with it showed it was for a 125 - 140 ps Fabia as the Cupra is 180 I thought it best to drop TMC an email, they suggested I send it to them for checking, which I did, and they checked and returned for no charge! I really was pleasently surprised by great service offered. I have been running with it turned up to No. 7 for about 2 months now, and had no engine management lights or other problems. Good easy to fit, cheap, power boost . . . .
