Turbo failure

The egr isnt electronic on the BLT either, the completely seperate ASV is. If you use the correct egr delete and retain the ASV you still get a light, its because the ecu monitors a change in airflow when the egr cycles/operates via the maf. If done this way the egr can be mapped out, the ASV being missing however cannot be mapped out without loosing the eml completely.

This was the case a few years ago, though now days, both EGR and ASV can be mapped out individually without affecting the rest of the DTC table.

Hey all!

My turbo went a couple of days ago  and this thread describes pretty much exactly the situation that I'm in now! I was just wondering whether when i fix my turbo whether it is worth buying new silicone hoses as well to negate any further problems i might have with older (original) turbo hoses and the like. If so i assume its off to forge for these...?

Sorry, I'm not trying to jack this thread its just very useful information for me. Thanks guys.

This thread is for everyone to use. I used 4 screws in my pipes at each join and it holds sweet. But if you can afford a front mount then get 1 of them with new silicone pipes

If your changing the turbo yourself like I did its a great opportunity to clean the egr and inlet as they get so clogged up its disgusting!. If your using the old pipes give them a good clean and if you don't want to remove the intercooler shine a light in the and run your finger around in the hole if there are any fileings is has to come off and be cleaned

I’m changing the intercooler on mine – on the advice of the mechanic. (additional cost but didn’t want to refuse doing that in case there was something in the intercooler which could cause it to happen again). You can ofcourse clean it out yourself.

I would also try SFS for the pipes – great service and quality looks and feels as good as forge. Check my other threads for a pic/ info.

On a separate note – EGR pipe from an ASZ golf won’t fit if you get a Garratt ASZ turbo as it’s a different shape (which has the EGR outlet in a slightly different position). Looks like I will be adding the blanking plates afterall.

I’m still unclear as to whether the MIL light can be cancelled and whether I need a Allard type delete rather than just blanking plates?

P.s. Jamescupra1 - still no MIL light I assume? Did you get a chance to do a How-to on turbo change? Would be very useful for other members.

An allard delete is a good investment. You've got that big ugly circle thing in the egr wich is creating drag. When I have a spare few quid I wish thinking about gettin the egr pro its got the same clips as the standard so it's a direct replacement there 90 pound I think

Would you mind elaborating on this please? Can anything be done with VCDS?

Simply - can MIL be eliminated with EGR delete or not?

If so - instructions?

I've seen a egr delete with nipples on to occomidate the air lines to keep them in operation instead on blocking them I don't no if this will eliminate anything with there design its worth asking the company

I may just live with the light if it comes on. My concern is if the MIL is on constantly I won't know if it's trying to tell me something else is up. I do have VCDS so I could check regularly but I would want to know as and when the problem occurs.

An EGR Delete is good however, £90 would be abit to much. There are places on the web that are selling them for about £40 and most 'automotive specialists' are selling them at about £60-65 delivered. There are no 'alternatives' to the delete itself, so companies that guarantee to completely delete the EGR on your engine and remove the engine management light without a remap of the ECU should be avoided.

You can turn the EGR valve down through VCDS but cannot disable it completely. You'll have to see a decent remapper for them to disable the EGR completely.

When I installed my EGR delete a few weeks ago, no Engine Management light came on for about 85 miles and then one morning it was there. It's touch and go whether you'll get it in the first mile or first hundred.

I removed my EGR Valve and replaced it with the Darkside Developments 51mm kit. All I had to do was cut the metal bracket off the end of the boost pipe and use the supplied jubilee kit to secure it to the pipe.

The two vacuum pipes were then sealed using a bolt and jubilee clip, then secued using zip tie to the other vacuum pipes. Total time for install, 40 mins.

So I fixed the Turbo and the car is back up and running fine again and I thought I would just post a picture of the mangled state the old one was in! :-o

P.S Sorry the pictures are not that clear this was done at night under a spot light!

Murry, did you replace with another KKK or Garret? New or used?

Also did you do it yourself as well?

On mine I think the nut was dislodged so needed all pipes etc clearing out.

I got a re-manufactured one from Midlands Turbo was about £350 inc. VAT and next day delivery.

Well I didn't exactly fit it myself! A good friend of mine works at a SEAT garage and he pretty much done the lot for me. I gave him £100 quid for doing it but the garage quoted me £640...
!

From what I could see its not actually that hard a job as long as you have the tools to do it. Obviously this is easy for me to say as i was merely doing the easy parts of the job.

I didn't manage to get a picture of the other side but on that side the nut had come off and wedged in the impeller blades which must have caused the problem in the first place.
