Turbo replacement!!

My neighbour and his father in law each bought a brand new 2007 Altea 140TDI. Today, after struggling to get up a hill in 2nd gear the father in laws Altea took a visit to the dealers who after an hour of diagnosis decided that the Turbo needs replaced under warranty. (I'm sure this would cost the guts of a £1000). My neighbour wants to ask if anyone knows of a recall notice on this particular engine as there seemed to be no quibble from the dealers and he is now obviously concerned that the same issue may occur on his!!

Turbos on 140 TDI (across whole VAG group) are reputedly weak and fail. However many on here with 140 TDI and no problems with turbo. That includes many mapped ones too.
Was it smoking big time too? If so this may be the air inlet/intercooler pipes have blown or come loose. Remember dealers may not diagnose correctly or see a quick buck if warrenty work. A turbo replace on 140 tdi is not a big job.
Could also be the VNT system is coked up with soot.

I wasn't happy to read that the 140TDI engines are weak! I also own a 140TDI Alhambra Stylance!! I better take it easy driving it from now on lol!!

The only weak part of a PD140 BKD engine that i know of is the head as a dodgy batch got fitted causing the head gasket to leak or head to crack.

no its not the 140 BKD engine thats weak - just some of the turbos used seem to fail prematurely.

i drive '05 altea 2.0 tdi 140ps and up until now - 80k miles - 3rd turbo is on the engine and soon the 4th. first exploded in a cloud of smoke and with a loud thunder, second one started to whistle, really loud, and now third one is leaking oil on the axle so the fourth one is in my trunk waiting for two more days that my mechanic will change it. first was the original, second also, third is from the golf 2.0 dsg(1,5k miles) and the forth is from octavia(0,5k miles). as i heard, skoda has the most reliable and toughest turbos in all VAG concern. i'll se if this is really true.
