How sensitive is it?

I had a 'low pressure' warning flag up on the way in to work today.

On inspecting the tyre I could see a nail embedded in the centre of the tread, but no obvious loss of pressure. Took it to a type place, who removed the nail but reported no repair necessary as it had gone in at a significant angle and bent, rather than puncturing the tyre.

Obviously I'll check again when home tonight, but I'm surprised it could detect such a small difference. Impressive.

My tyre pressure monitoring system likes to cry wolf. It comes on at least once a month for no reason at all.

Did you get a good look at the offending nail? I'd be replacing the tyre personally.

Unfortunately not, but I asked twice and was assured no repair required. The nail was flat right in the middle of the tyre, equidistant from the tyre wall.

I'll monitor it and so how I go, as the car is only a week old!

Fair enough mate, just take it easy

Up until this weekend I had had 3 'false alarms'. Each time I checked the pressures and they were spot on.
Early hours of Sunday morning I had a puncture.
No warning from the monitoring system. The fisrt thing I knew was when I heard the rumbling of a flat tyre. Put on the space saver spare and guess what....! Bloody pressure warning. So basically the system is a complete waste of time. It's as useful as the voice activation system which is appalling!

I disagree. 18 months in and I have had no false alarms. The only times it has gone off was a right rear puncture which it alerted me to at 20psi and when I put four new tyres on and it needed to be re-calibrated. Good system as far as I'm concerned.

Checked the tyres lunchtime (I had no idea the car came with a pressure meter/pump) and the tyre in question was 5 psi down. No idea if it was before though as I'd not checked them up to now (except visually).

At least I now have a known quantity to check again once home.

The system in my Ibiza has always been right when I have had a puncture. The only issue is unlike the Leon it doesnt tell you which tyre.

mine also seems to go off for no reason. Not enough, maybe 4/5 times in 2 years. Irritating though.
But not much in the overall scheme of Seat ownership, as my Merc was far less reliable:)

Well, who'd have guessed it - went flat on the way home (and the monitor picked it up fine). Clearly the tyre did need fixing/replacing.

Somewhat annoyed as I'll now have to take annual leave tomorrow morning to sort this.

The system should work, after all it's really not rocket science! In fact I can't see how it can do anything but work! But the the fact remains that, on my car, it didn't and as such I have no confidence in it at all.
It's good to hear that some people haven't had issues with it. I can only recommend that you don't rely on it too much and check pressures manually every now and then.

Agree with you there. Would never suggest it keeps the pressures with enough accuracy. I still check the tyres once a fortnight with my own gauge.

Worked for me. No false positives but got a warning also identifying the correct tyre. Disbelieved it to start with but then a quick visual inspection showed a screw in the centre of the tyre ironically picked up from Screwfix the day before.

Used the tyre pump to reflate and off we went to the tyre dealer for a repair.

All good since

Would never rely on it for the regular check though it's too coarse for that

Does yours actually tell you which tyre it is for? As far as I could see on mine it didn't tell me which tyre.

(Can't remember if I only checked the wee screen tho rather than the main screen when mine went off)

The main screen said nearside rear and indicated on the graphic of the car. It didn't give the pressure reading though

It won't give a pressure reading as it doesn't measure pressure. It measures effective circumference (which is effected by pressure) and assumes that if one wheel is going round faster than the other 3 then it has lost pressure. It would have to do this over a reasonable distance to rule out cornering influences, which is probably why it didn't react to my puncture as my tyre deflated in a short distance.
Having now thought about it whilst writing this, I should give the system another chance!
It would be interesting to know how far you would have to travel for it to react, so:
Set tyre pressures to a known pressure.
Press Calibrate button.
Drive for approx. 1 mile.
Reset trip.
Drop 1 tyre pressure by 5psi.
Drive until the warning comes up.
Read distance from trip.

Oh, and finally post on here because I probably won't get round to doing it!!

It uses the cars ESP system to monitor the wheels, it doesn't measure actual pressure. Something like an unbalanced wheel or tire could technically set the system off if it deviates from the expected rotation of the wheel.

I don't know if mine works!

It's never been on!!

I check the pressure every now and then and never had to adjust them!

its the same system that was on my Ibiza and that worked really well picked up a 3 psi drop and never any false alarms

Well if you're checking your pressures with a gauge and they have not dropped that means you would not have gotten an alarm then would it?

Easiest way to check functionality is to leave air out of your tyre and drive the car. It should pick it up within a few minutes. Make sure you calibrate and set your pressures through the cars system beforehand for accurate results.
