Hi,
Has anyone had a remap done by Ultramap?? Had one done recently and i am experiencing a flat spot between 3500rpm and 4000rpm? any ideas???

nope never heard of them

what is the engine in your car, 1.8T?

Was the flat spot noticeable as soon as the remap was done, or has it only happened a few weeks after driving the remap?

never heard of ultramap....sound like superchips, cowboys IMO

Can I ask what made you choose ultramap over the likes of the better well known tuners like Revo, Jabba, APR etc?

Ultramap are a forum sponsor aren't they? Might be worth getting in touch with them first and ask their advice.

They are far from Cowboys though Harvey. Just because you haven't heard of them, it doesn't mean they aren't good at what they do. There was a time when you didn't know who Revo were, did you rubbish them before finding out more about them?

yes i rubbish everything cos i am God.....no seriously, perhaps a bit harsh yes

seriously though, have you called them, or indeed been back to them to get them to investigate

VAG Com could well be a good start here to see if it throws up any error codes

MAF perhaps?

Hi all thanks for the responses, i have been back to them and they told me to replace my GFB splitter DV with a forge 007 ... so i did and no difference, just thought i'd see if anyone had experienced a similar problem and might have an instant cure.
On the Q. did i check other mappers first? Yes i did but found Ultramap the most helpful so went with them!
Will go back to them to try and resolve it.

sorry but they told you to replace the GFB splitter DV?

did they not run any diags first? seems odd for a supposedly well renowned tuner to ask you to replace other bits of the engine without doing any initial investigation first

True?!? Yeah they said b4 they turned up to change it and that from the cars they had done b4 it was the best option, they have come back to me today and said i should replace my plugs.
Failing that they have another map that runs less boost......like i want that!

looking at your signature, you've got a K&N Typhoon air filter.

You may want to do some data-logging, and perhaps check for error codes, to make sure that your MAF is working properly, and that your requested vs actual boost tally up.

You could also try a TB reset, as I have found this to help with my occasional flat-spot.

Plugs need to be replaced every 40k miles (long-life) and a good-service always helps a car to run smoother.

Finally, find yourself a good garage who are willing to put your car on an RR and do some diags while it's on there. It's amazing how many things can be picked up.

And out of interest - the 230bhp in your sig - is this a guesstimate, or have you actually got that result from an RR?

they told me that cars of the same spec regularly post such figures but yes its only a guesstimate.
Know of any Good RR garages around Bedfordshire area?? Roughly how much would i be looking at?
Have checked for error codes and none found.
Car is serviced religiously, and even has an extra oil change between intervals.
excuse the nievaty.. wots TB?

Ah, I see! was just being lazy. will mention this to them, see what they say

Ok - fair enough :)

Erm, I don't know the area, but a diag. session on an RR could be around £60. Thinking about it though, you could probably get the same results by driving on open roads with a laptop plugged in and doing some logging with VAG-COM

Ok- best bet is to do some logging then, and see what airflow your MAF is reading, check actual vs requested boost, n75 duty cycle etc.

TB is Throttle body - reset/align the TB basically resets the accl. pedal position with the potentiometer in the throttle-body. You could also get your garage, or yourself, to remove the TB and clean around it as cr*p can build up in that area, giving problems.

sorry but i actually revert back to my original statement, - cowboys! and the point is being some what missed here

any well known and customer focused tuner would get your car in straight away and get it on the rollers and plugged into the computer to see whats goin on

dont replace anything else on the car, demand for them to check it out

if you went to a shop and bought an electrical item and it was faulty, you would not expect the shop to turn around and tell you to buy another item to replace the faulty one would you, or indeed buy parts yourself to repair the faulty item? No, you would take the item back and want a refund or the item repaired

same as you, get it refunded and go to a decent tuner (I dont care if they are a forum sponsor, so what!) or get them to investigate the issue "properly"

also you should not be doing the logs or the initial leg work, its the tuning companies responsbility to find the issue!

Personally with the service you have got so far, I would get a full refund, the ECU reverted back to standard and go to Revo, Jabba, APR, P-Torque or Custom Code

Will give them one last try to sort it, then will go down your suggested route.

Thanks for your input HarveyGTI, nice to know there are still people out there that are willing to just spout out any old crap without finding out the full story first!

First of all Ultramap are authorised dealers of Chippeduk remaps and we work as mobile tuners. We are serious about what we do and are not "cowboys". We don't put cars on the rollers because we don't have a mobile rolling road and do not need one for our remaps. Our customers are made aware of this and in general we get very good results. As folks know there are many levels of tuning and we are remapping cars at the level below live mapping which is what Harvey is talking about, but even in that case, if there is potentially a weak component or a car that has problems, the remap will only exaggerate it and not fix it.

We have been in communication with W88DSY and we are trying to resolve the issue. The DV was changed because it is a known weak spot on these cars and other 1.8T units that more often than not cause early boost pressure release negating some of the remaps efforts. You don't need diagnostics to tell you that when experience and widespread recorded findings point this way. How many LC & LCR owners on this site have forge DV's? We have told W88DSY to also check/replace the spark plugs and check the coil packs too because again they are weak points of the 1.8t's make up and can result in flatspots as experienced.

We are further hindered by the fact that we are 150 miles away from where the car is based (cumbria) so its not like we can spend time on it and get to the bottom of the problem. We have offered to have W88DSY's car down at our HQ to get it on the RR so that we can get some runs and make adjustments and carry out full diagnostics to see if there is an underlying problem with the car but we have been told that this is not possible and that the car cant make it down here. I have then read on this thread that W88DSY is asking about a RR in Bedford so I am left wondering why can't he get to Birmingham which is kind of on the way to Bedford?

I have also been reading the thread on this forum regarding turbo surge which could potentially be the problem with W88DSY's car as it has the same symptons. Forum members cars affected by this are in all kinds of format. Some are remapped by Revo(amongst others), some are modded to the hilt while some are totally standard. Some have tried replacing all kinds of parts suggested and related but ALL have failed to sort out the problem which manifests in strange boost and flat spot characteristicsaround the 3k mark under full and part load. See here.

We are continuing to work with W88DSY to try and get to the bottom of it all but there is a possibility that the problem has always been there and that the remap just made it clear to feel.

As enthusiastic vehicle tuners we also do our research and try to do the best job we can but sometimes it seems this is not good enough to some.

good, thats your opinion, and mine still remains the same

this sounds a bit familiar.....had mine remapped by responsechips who arent major for vag cars but i know guys with evos who approve them, however ive had sort of similar probs.went to awsome gti for advice and they told me that a map can highlight what can be an un-noticable fault with certain components.this isnt theyre fault really.
the chance is the cars they have set these maps up with have been good or theyn havent had any probs.after all i thinkeveryone realises that when u change something on your car it might not be 100%

Indeed a multitude of things can go wrong with the 1.8T, MAF is a regular favourite, flakey N75, Lambda sensors the list goes on. Anyone of these fail or start failing, you'll get issues.

I guess it was ok at installation of the map? Maps don't just change parameters and suddenly start producing flat spots. If it was the map, it would of done it from day one.

So you have to ask yourself, why didn't you notice it from day one!

I would suggest getting it diagnosed for faulty bits, seems to me Ultramap have offered their help, but the customer won't take the car to them, that's hardly their fault. Maybe the customer should try another VAG specialist closer to home if they are not willing to travel, and get them to check the engine for the regular faults that plague the 1.8T, find the fault and the map will be fine again.
