Universal Air filter

Is there a downside to a universal air filter (i.e. green cotton for example). I saw one at halfords for £30 but its universal. So i'm thinking, greens a good brand, if the diameter for the maf is right, whats the problem? and if there isnt one... why do people spend so much more on a 'specific' one?

and while i'm on this... what is the correct diameter for a leon cupra (facelift) 180

No downside except you will have to fabricate a bracket to hold the filter so that is doesn't just hang from the maf. I've got a Jetex cone, 304mm long, 140mm -120mm diameter taper -£50...

Im using a universal green filter at the moment, car runs fine and sounds good too...

B3lsy and myself used a universal filter (i think B3lsy used a HKS mushroom filter), take the top half of the airbox off and fix the filter into the lower section of the airbox, you can also cut the top section to fit close to the filter, thus air from the airfeed will be forced towards it, you also get more induction roar and louder dump noise i think.

good advice. think i'll do that. any idea how much a standard air box is from the dealers?

hey people i was just thinking about get an up rated panel filter i.e green or pipe cross, will it make any difference?

i have always gone with bolt ons in other cars (but never in a leon) rather than panels they seem to work better to me

A tiny little bit yes as you got to compensate for the extra air, but not badly unless your on the redline 24:7
