*URGENT* what tools needed for MK3 Brake Change?

Hiya,

I am going to change the front and rear discs + pads on my MK3 Cupra on Thursday, just wondering EXACTLY what i'll need before I set out to do it, the reason this post is urgent, is that I am buying anything extra tommorow, so I can just start Thursday with no interuptions...

I need;

Pads + Discs (obviously lol) 280mm discs right?
Jack/Axel Stands
Copper grease / Torque wrench
Various sockets/wrench/breaker bar.

I need a caliper windback tool, but Halfords near me has only one made by LASER, and it doesnt list the SEAT as a car its for...?

I also heard I need an impact or pozidrive screwdriver for the screw holding the brake disc on? What size do I need to get of those?

Anything else I need? Or does everything like rattle springs etc come with the new pads? (ATE Powerdiscs + pads)

Thanks folks,

Sean

im sure the bolts on the calipers tp the carriers are 13mm, the rear caliper carries to the axle are 6 or 7mm allen keys but not to sure on the fronts.

caliper wind back tools are mint, the 1 you say may not list seat but ull find as it will do the job.

impact driver maybe, a pozi screwdriver and a hammer may do

Hi mate,

What is an impact driver? Or a pozi screwdriver? Why are they any different to a normal screwdriver, and is it any particular size I need for the disc screw?

I wont need allen keys will I? As im not removing the caliper, Im just undoing the 2 bolts and moving it out the way to fit the new discs and pads... Then replacing it as normal.

impact driver, same as a srewdriver but can be hit with a hammer which enables more force to be applied to the screw, makeing them easier to remove.

you wont be able to fit pads without undoing the calipers.

if unsure take it to a garage should only be a couple of hours labour, mite be cheaper than buyin the tools

might be 'cheaper' this time, but next time you'll have the tools.

very straight forward, and once you've done it - you'll realise it :)

Jack/Axel Stands
Copper grease / Torque wrench
Various sockets/wrench/breaker bar.
Caliper wind-back tool.
Impact driver.

Thats all I need yea?

Am I right in saying, for the rear, is ;

1)Undo brake fluid reservoir cap.
2)Jack car up / remove road wheel.
2)Undo the bolts holding the caliper in place, put caliper aside supported.
3)Remove pads, use impact driver and unscrew single screw holding disc in place.
4)Clean the area with copper brush, use brake cleaner, then put new disc in place, and use screw to screw it into place.
5)Use caliper wind-back tool on caliper piston, hope it goes back (!) then place pads (which have been copper-greased on the back) in.
6)Put caliper back in place, put caliper bolts back in and tighten til cannot tighten anymore (with hand wrench).
7) Repeat for other rear-side.

Fronts, same as above, but with easier pushing back of the piston...?

Is the above all I need to do? As I dont understand this 'caliper to axle allen key screw' why is that there? Isn't it just the same as the fronts with 2 bolts holding the caliper in place? It sounds complicated? :(

try changing discs on a rover 600!!!!!!!!!
they come off the back of the bearing, once all lower suspension arms are removed?

got to be the w4nkiest ones i've done so far (about 20 different cars)

from what you're descibing, should be a piece of p1ss.
hope all goes well.........Stu

rear allen key (cap head screw) hold caliper mounting brkt to stub axle.. so to change disk you need this off. 6mm or 8mm key from memory and usually tight.
Stick a hex drive socket onto the socket screws and tap it with a hammer to shock the screw. Usually helps undo them then.

When adjusting caliper piston with the tool, do so not to wind it all the way back but so you have a good snug but not too tight a fit on the pads when you put it on ensuring the disk turns freely. All the way back and you may end up with a long brake pedal.

good luck

Right, Excellent, thanks for that Bill, I have various sockets, hex and torx etc so that should be fine.
I'll remember about not winding them in too much, just enough to get the pads in, plus a tiny bit more of a gap, but not too much.

Its the rears that are urgently needing doing, as for some reason the driver side-rear brake pad has gone down to the bare metal! And has carved into the disc! Strange how its done it on the one of the rear side of the car only, hopefully its nothing serious though and new brakes will sort it :)

Have I missed undoing handbrake cables? Can I get away with not doing that?

er yea...
pop em off.. you dont want to adjust them with cable on (and you will struggle to get it off without popping off the cable)
