v5 throttle response

Been a lurker for some time, picking up stacks of v useful feedback, for which many thanks. Have now taken the plunge and bought an 02 v5 170 with 49k on the clock. Its got a FSH and appears to have been fairly well looked after, including a very recent service.
Initial impressions after a thousand miles or so are that its ideal for what I bought it for - a 70 mile daily commute, mostly on the M25 with some country/urban roads. Having filled up the last couple of times on 98 octane (to see if it would fix the problem I am now asking for help on - getting there, patience) it now feels a bit smoother and the fuel consumption has improved by about 3mpg.
However... I am still suffering with what feels like a throttle problem. I like to consider myself (ahem) a proficient and smooth driver but if I use say three quarter throttle to accelerate and then start to smoothly reduce the throttle (eg to stop accelerating so hard, or even to change gear) the engine response feels a bit "jerky", as if I was not rolling off the throttle smoothly.
I know from previous threads that the v5 is prone to MAF failures, but from what I have read before the symptoms dont seem to match. I wonder whether this is instead a problem with the throttle position sensor? Any one else suffered these symptoms, and if so what was the cure?
PS If anyone can recommend a decent garage near Heathrow or Guildford that would also be v helpful!
PPS Sorry for such a long post, must stay off the e numbers...

This sounds like a problem that I had. I lost some other functions too, like cruise control.

If it's not the MAF then maybe it's worth checking out 'resetting' the throttle body. Worked a treat for me, no problems since!

Have you got any mods planned?

Dunno bout the cruise control as I never use it ! Mods I'm considering are the AMD remap and some Goodyear F1s to replace the crap P7s that are only good for playing tunes on as you understeer off into the scenery. Would be interested in a zorst but the consensus seems to be there aren'y any worth the bother (definition of worth the bother = no boy racer tail pipes, no booming, doesnt cause loss of low end power but provides a slight lift in noise so you can hear the luverly engine at work whilst remaining quiet on the cruise
How did you get your throttle body reset?

Local dealer in Coventry, they used VAG-COM to sort it out. Although M0rk did try his best to do it for me.

I'm sure there is someone on here, local to you that has VAG-COM that could help out..... anyone??

I have just had the tyres done and they do make a difference, like you I had P7's, which are just not up to the job!

My car feels very similar to this. I find it hard to get smooth 1st to 2nd changes whether i take it easy or accelerate a bit harder.

I think its probably not helped by the sensitive drive by wire system.

I had a similar problem with my 2001 V5. JUst had the throttle body 'modified' by the local dealer for c£100 and its now a whole lot better (although still ticking over at 700 rpm - is that normal?).

When you say "modified", were they more specific?, coz my throttle has a cable rather than 'drive by wire'

To finish up on my part...

Took the car to have a diagnostic. It was runnign on 90 GSM of air. Basically the MAF was gone.

Changed the MAF and it now pulls like a train in all gears, smooth as silk and sounds nicer too!!

First thing I would do is clean out the throttle body and put it though basic settings. If symptons persist then Air Flow meter or temp sensor would be next to check.

I bought mine from Wiltshires in Farnham. Very good dealer and local to Guildford (just off the Shepherd and Flock at the end of the A31).

Thanks for the suggestion - seems to be the only recommended dealer in my area. Been in there before - the saleman wont be on my xmas card list but I'll give their service dept a go.
Out of interest, dont 'spose anyone know of a good independent VAG specialists somewhere between Guildford and Heathrow?
