Been a lurker for some time, picking up stacks of v useful feedback, for which many thanks. Have now taken the plunge and bought an 02 v5 170 with 49k on the clock. Its got a FSH and appears to have been fairly well looked after, including a very recent service.
Initial impressions after a thousand miles or so are that its ideal for what I bought it for - a 70 mile daily commute, mostly on the M25 with some country/urban roads. Having filled up the last couple of times on 98 octane (to see if it would fix the problem I am now asking for help on - getting there, patience) it now feels a bit smoother and the fuel consumption has improved by about 3mpg.
However... I am still suffering with what feels like a throttle problem. I like to consider myself (ahem) a proficient and smooth driver but if I use say three quarter throttle to accelerate and then start to smoothly reduce the throttle (eg to stop accelerating so hard, or even to change gear) the engine response feels a bit "jerky", as if I was not rolling off the throttle smoothly.
I know from previous threads that the v5 is prone to MAF failures, but from what I have read before the symptoms dont seem to match. I wonder whether this is instead a problem with the throttle position sensor? Any one else suffered these symptoms, and if so what was the cure?
PS If anyone can recommend a decent garage near Heathrow or Guildford that would also be v helpful!
PPS Sorry for such a long post, must stay off the e numbers...
