It is interesting as I have read alot about the 1.4 tsi 180ps produces too much torque for the manual box. Seems odd, surely a manual 6 sp box from the golf GTI would cost less than a 7 sp DSG?

Actually the more I think about it, I just think it's just Seat's Marketing Dept that made the call. Couldn't be that difficult to mate a manual box with the TSI engines, could it? I really should stop replying to posts without thinking things through first! lol
Well no because its the same in the Fabia/ Polo/ A1... the 1.4 TSI can only be had in combination with the DSG gearbox. I think there is some technical explanation as to why cars on that platform can't get a 6-speed with the TSI, but I'm not sure what it could be.
You may well have a point there. So it may some technical problem that prevents them bolting on a manual box, or possibly they just decided at VW Group Corporate level that they wanted to just go with the DSG for the higher powered TSI engines.
Only thing is, don’t the 120HP 1.4 TSI Leons have a manual box? Maybe those manual boxes can take 120HP but can't take the higher power/torque outputs of the quicker engines. I'm sure VW Group could have developed an appropriate manual box if they had wanted. Perhaps they just thought it wasn't economically viable to do so. Maybe because they thought drivers of performance cars would want to go for the DSG box anyway.

1.4 16V is crap on fuel and even worse on performance! The power output might be similar to the previous models but it feels slower even though it's 25kg lighter than the Mk4 equivalent (according to Carfolio). Wish I'd known about the 1.2Tsi when I traded in the civic, was offered a 1.2 and laughed at the guy... kinda wished I hadn't now lol he neglected to mention it was turbo'd

I think he is comparing it to the 1.2 tfsi, which will have better performance, and will do more to the gallon if driven correctly, but I'm sure not many people have been taught how to drive a turbo engine for fuel. . .

Nothing broken about it, it's still a baby at 12k too! To be honest if you're used to driving small engined cars you probably won't find anything wrong but I've had a string of performance cars and am used to that driving style. I've also had quite a few 1.4 Seats as well though (in my younger years). Definitely don't get 400 miles out of a tank though!! Struggles to get 300! Perhaps around town you could if you drove like a granny everywhere.
Mine uses almost as much petrol as my modded Type R did, small engines have to work harder. The reason I got it is coz that's all I could afford at the time having lost my job. It'll probably be traded in for something better next year, possibly a Cupra/Boc
