Water leak into footwell - dodgy seal info and DIY repair guide (Image links dead)

Also needs to be Sealant you can use externally. I did take the whole filter body out completely and cleaned it all out - the only way to do this is to dismantle the bit below the window and remove the windscreen wipers - did you do that??

I asked TPS about door seals - when you open the door the plastic seal that runs the full circumference of the door is approx £43 exVAT per seal!! So I thought Fcuk em!!!!

But your problem you have to dismantle the door and do the above fix.

Will redo my work and take the door cards off and seal them up Ill get the miss to run the hose pipe around the door for a while to see if I can see any water entering the car.

Ahhh you see the water comes in under the carpet. It doesn't soak in via the top of the carpet. If you see my images you can see the trails Im not sure that you will see that if you don't hoik the carpet up. Remember you also have to dry it out.

It was drying out lovely until we had heavy rain one nite damm thing haha I'll get there soon im sure.

Some thread this! And some helpful contributions....

I have looked at much of it as I have the same problem as many with my 04 130TDI.
So... if both rear footwells are soaking but the front ones are dry, does that mean it must be the rear doors?

The front footwells seem ok, despite a tiny bit of water being seen on the passenger mat occasionally (presume pollen filter cover) and there is usually some water on the drivers "sill" under the door on opening.

I have got all the stuff to do the repairs but which are the most likely door/s to suspect?

The amount of work needed to carry all that work out in the link is frightening!
I have access to specialist drying kit, so it is a question of trial and error maybe. I am beginning to wonder if it is going to be worth it. I love the old bus, but is it time for someone with more time or money than me to adopt her!

It doesn't cost that much to seal the doors and the pollen filter especially if you use Sealant rather than Butyl Strip.

I recently had wet rear footwell again after all the work I did with the Pollen Filter and Door Cards. Had to dismantle again (Passenger Seat & Door Cards removed) and found that rain water was pooling on the outside of the passenger door seal and building up under the rubber and dripping into the car. I have now sealed the inside of the rubber door seals with silicone and replaced it on to the metal frame. I have checked and I think I am sealed up again.

Def a love hate with the LCR but may as well keep it now considering how much I have done. I have found a little bit of water in the boot which I need to sort out in the Summer had enough now.

I've been finding water in my boot too, specifically in the spare wheel well. I've traced it (I think) to the rear light clusters - there seems to be (surprise surprise) a piece of foam type substance there to do the job of keeping water out, which it clearly isn't doing! I'll be getting the roll of butyl seal out in the better weather to replace that 'seal' on each rear light cluster. I suppose that could explain why the previous owner of the car might have removed the bung that I found missing from the spare wheel well last year.

Mine isn't in the spare wheel well yet but I have an old sleeping bag on top so that might have absorbed it. I can see water trail on the plastic cover (on left) when you lift the base its a little damp. I will need to take the plastic off and see if I can see any thing underneath. Can you take a pic of where the seal is that you have located.

You can't see the foam seal without removing the light cluster and I'm not inclined to do that in this weather. It is pressed between the bodywork and the light cluster. Maybe they leak on mine because the light clusters have been disturbed in the past, who knows.

Anyway, after some rain (while waiting for the windows to clear) I checked behind the cover which you remove to change a bulb and there was water in the gap between the plastic of the light cluster and the bodywork (above was dry) and a pool of water in the boot, with what seemed to be water trails leading from behind the trim below the light clusters to the spare wheel well.

FFS!!! Really!! I will need to see how I can remove the light cluster then and check the seal. Sounds like that's it then. I have taken the cover for the bulb change and no water there. God I hope this is the last place!!!

Guys, am I right in saying if the door seals have been re-done correctly, there shouldn't be any water on top of the sills when you open the door after a night of rain?
I ask this because I've done both driver side doors and only the driver door has water on the sill where as the rear door does not.

I have used Sealant in the actual door seal - if you pull it off and seal inside and then push it back in position it will stop water pooling into the car (under the rubber seal). Of course ensure you are no where near the leak holes.

Yeah, the previous owner had a go at sealing it but used the wrong type of silicone (gone mouldy) and the water was coming from the bottom of the carrier plate, near the speaker area (both front and back doors).
The next dry day I'll take the carrier off and do it tidily.

I shall be doing this in the near future mine are leaking, some one has attempted to fix it badly sealant between the door card and door skin ..Wow.
