Wheel alignment...

Good morning,

Tried to get our Arona alignment checked this morning but was told away due to the "ADACS system needing alignment", this sounds a bit BS to me, is there any truth to it?

If so, how does one do a normal alignment on the front (or all 4) wheels?

They are correct, it’s all down to the ADAS lane keeping aid needing calibration after the alignment

Sly870 have you got lane assist on it thou ?. If you have lane assist then then any alignment is suppose to be done on VAG approved equipment. It's in short supply / expensive so the vehicles go off to regional centres with it. It's only when the front screen is replaced and the camera needs to be re-glued back on or mechanical damage etc. For general tyre work, tyre places (some) have a way of friging the alignment using standard "4 wheel laser allignment" equipment by placing the front wheels at dead centre forward, then the rest falls into place circumventing VAG approved equipment. That's what's said on Skoda boards when I researched it back in 2016. Protyres changed my 4 tyres on 4drive with lane assist, aligned and didn't say anything (all been good). If you hit the kerb, bend the steering rods etc or had a windscreen change you would be looking to a VAG central site other than that your normal tyre place can do it if they have the settings. Latter seems to be an issue with some thou.

I can't say I read the Arona ad materiel but pretty sure they don't drive themselves yet unlike Ateca's, Leon4s, Formentor's, Tarracoes with Lane Assist so ADACS didn't come into. They probably didn't want the work. If you haven't got lane assist doesn't need fancy equipment and if you haven't bent anything or have had the lane assist camera off then there are ways using non ADACS equipment.

Fancy stuff used in the centralised calibration centres.

My useless local main dealer told me that they just take cars down to a local bloke who does the alignment!

Nope, no lane assist. This was a Protyres shop that turned me away :(

That was Protyres not knowing its stuff where you went to. Protyres did mine and I do have Lane Assist. No question. Think they follow the Briskoda discussion I found. Front wheels at dead centre and they can use their own equipment if they have the settings for the car. If you haven't got lane assist there is not an issue.

Only if the steering is damaged or the lane assist camera is repositioned do you need the full VAG equipment... or they don't have the setting which the VAG approved equipment shows when the cars identity is entered into their system.

Had to dig out my old research on this thread:

They don't have the settings thou. Tyre places can commercially buy the data

Vag equipment is this, they do the training:

I reckon the settings get passed within tyre chain places that don't have the ADAS equipment. My local Protyres had no issue in changing the tyres and doing a realignment using the dead centre method on steering. Damage with lane assist cameras then you are off to an approved VAG centre.
