out and about this evening, rear wheel bearing failed.

question is do i need a Press to refit these or will i be able to "tap" them back in

They'll be a press fit.

Allthough you'll be able smack the inner and outer races with a suitable sized drift and hammer, I would use a proper press to put the new races in. Haynes suggest in the absense of a proper press, bashing them in with a suitable sized socket. But try that at your peril as you're liekly to push them in un-true.

I would not reccomend changing a rear bearing unless you have a proper method of pressing the bearing in!

Or even get a local garage to press the bearings in of you give them the bits and a little bribe:)

how old is the car?, i thought the newer vehicles rear wheel bearing came complete with the hub etc as a complete unit?,

I did mine today Gary, the wee seagull must have had sympathy pains for my car ! Got a friend to press the bearings in.

thats my thinking, the nut that holds the bearing is spining and not getting tight after a certain point and now wont losen off ?

try taking the split pin off?

The nut itself is not meant to me done up tight, only enough for ther to be no play in the wheels and the nut cover/split pin arrangement stops it from coming apart.

Adjust the wheel bearing so you can just move the washer behind the nut with a flat screw driver, but so there is no play in the bearing, i find this the best way, also if you tighten to much it will force the grase out the bearings (which should have loads in)
