Hi Stealthdave.

Stealer checked the GEO, said that wad fine. It's all to do with the sports suspension mixed with BRIDGSTONE tyres. I ws told it's the tyre compound that is the real problem. Probobly Bull S**t but it's OK now the tyres have been changed.

17" alloys, sports suspension + bridgestone tyres = the noise you describe.

Same on an Altea with less than 2000 miles, with the same combo.

I had an earlier model 2.0tFSi with 17" alloys, sports suspension - but with Pirelli Rosso's and never noticed the rumble you get on the Bridgestone's!

On mine, I do keep the tyre pressures up, and at least it minimises the effect.

that's the exact combo I have..:(

Seat UK still havn't replied...

Surely it's there mistake and the tyres should be changed under warranty?

It's going to be interesting to see what Seat say - given the very many comments that you've got from other people on this thread, and there are other's I've read of similar experiences - is this more a Bridgestone issue / tyre design function? Others seem to say Good Years / Michelin's etc. etc. don't have the problem!!
I like the car so much, I'm looking forward to wearing my tyres out, and getting 18" replacements with a non Bridgestone combo - 'til then it's radio vol 15+

I have an FR TDI as a company car and have just managed to get a four wheel geometry alignment check (and adjustments) and two new tyres fitted to solve unacceptable road noise from the rear tyres. Took some convincing to get the lease company to pay for it, but it has transformed the car.

A very helpful Seat garage identified exactly what the issue was - Worn inner edge of the tyre due to poor alignment. They gave me the before and after print out from my car which was shocking, 50% of the possible adjustments were way out of tolerance. Interestingly Kwik Fit who have the contract for new tyres for my car automatically fitted Dunlops over the original Bridgestones. Time will tell if this solves the problem for good.

Most garages (even main dealers) do not have the equipment to check camber on the rear so you may need to go to a specialist to get it sorted. The dealer advised new tyres will cure the problem in the short term but without the re-alignment the problem will never go away.

Has anyone taken their car to have the wheels aligned by laser?
If so did it do the trick, combined with tyre change?

I have been fobbed off by Seat UK,(Darren) who stated that "That is how it is meant to sound, you bought a performance car, which will be a hard ride and noisy" I kid you not.

He has never sat in my vehicle, so how the hell can he make a final decision with no knowledge of the noise. He told me to take it to another Seat garage for a second opinion, which will require a round trip of 120 miles for me!!!!

I am disgusted with Seat UK, they have no idea about customer service, I am left with a "faulty" vehicle, which despite being (allegedly) re-aligned, is still noisy and still has the same tyres on!!!. Garage who did the alleged work, claim they can't change the tyres until they get a report back from Spain(Yeah -Right). I am not asking for them to replace the car, I just want a specialist to examine it and sort it out. Will 2 tyres bankrupt Seat?

I have contacted trading standards and am awaiting a reply to see if i can take to specialist and pass bill to Seat. All I can say is God help anyone with a Seat in Carmarthenshire area, because there isn't a Seat dealer worth bothering with in the immediate vicinity. Cardiff or Pembrokeshire are nearest as yet un-tried dealers.

People on this forum say changing tyres gets rid of problem, but are they just hiding it until the new set are worn through, like the previous set. If so I will be changing tyres every 6000 miles, which works out quite expensive.
Has anyone on here changed tyres and then had the problem recur a few months later?

I find it incredible that in this day and age a manufacturer can design and build a car that has a clear fault in its make-up.

Anyone in the market for a Seat Fr tdi less than a year old??? I am getting close to leaving the seat gang!!!

I had my tyres changed which immediately quietened it down.. still road noise but what you would consider road noise.. not a bearing rumble sound.

I had the laser alignment done a couple days after I will post the results later (there were adjustments required). The camber is still out slightly and is non adjustable.

Rumbling noise from rear

Have given up getting any joy from Seat.

Took my Leon to a local tyre specialist today, who did a 4 wheel laser alignment check on my car. Despite Seat having claimed to have sorted the Alignment, it was still out by a couple of degrees.
The garage altered it to the correct setting and they then experimented by swapping back wheels to the front and vice versa. This didn't work and just shifted the noise from the rear to the front, with a distinct vibration and "stone in groove" noise. Clearly the tyres were too badly worn to allow the swap to work, but they tried. As a result I had to buy new tyres, but it was my decision and not forced on me by the garage.
The noise has now gone and it was clearly the tyres causing the noise as a result of uneven wear due to Seat failing to release a car from the factory with correctly aligned wheels. They will not acknowledge they are at fault and basically I have been told to Eff off by Seat UK.

I would recommend the garage to anyone, they were actually interested in sorting the problem out and did not try and sell me tyres. I was all for changing the four of them, but they recommended just getting shot of the worn ones, which had been swapped from back to front. They said they were the problem and that the others were fine for now. So they saved me 200 quid. Just as well because as I said the noise has now gone, or is so quiet as to be bearable on my ears.

Incidentally I swapped to Uniroyal Rain Sport 2 (Rain tyre) at reasonable money aswell.
The garage for anyone down this neck of the woods is Carmarthenshire Tyre Services in Alltycnap Road, Johnstown, Carmarthen. (4 wheel laser alignment equipment and good owner/ staff). Will use them again to change my back set next month. A decent business needs decent support and times are hard for everyone.

A worrying side story of this is that the Seat dealership who allegedly did the work on my alignment, appear to have had my tyres off the wheels. Which is unexplained, but I am convinced they swapped my tyres over for older ones when they had my car in. I looked at my tyres on having it back from them and was certain then, that they looked even more worn than prior to them having it. This was confirmed today when the garage who just changed my tyres pointed out marks consistent with the tyre being off before and asked me if I had had them off for any reason. They have been on since new and never repaired or replaced!!! If I could prove this I would make a formal complaint of theft, but unfortunately could never prove it and they know it. Should have marked them and photographed them before hand. Hindsights a wonderful thing. I will not name the Seat dealer, but anyone with a geography o level will work it out if they want to by reading this note of mine. Avoid like the plague.

Stealthdave.

Hope you have more joy than me. Seat UK simply aren't interested in helping they will ring you if you e-mail them and state they are "opening a file" for you. They then tell you to take it to dealers and have them look at it for you. As if I hadn't worked that out myself!!!
Then they ring you back following further e-mails of dissatisfaction and fob you off by telling you its your fault for buying a sporty car with a hard noisy ride. This is despite the fact they have never left their comfy call centre to drive and experience the complaint they are dealing with. They simply don't give a damn and are just going through the motions.
If the tyres are changed it will be solely down to the dealer and his own customer management skills/ business pride and nothing to do with Seat UK.

Hi, just to throw my twopence in...

I've got a 56 reg (Jan 07) FR TDI - bought with 7500 on the clock - and at around 10k it developed the rumbling noise that you've all had. Took it into the dealer i bought it from and they confirmed the rear wheels were stepped badly but that it was nothing to do with poor suspension etc - so I left!

Walked into local tyre place who did 4 wheel alignment and it needed 4 new tyres - Pilot sport 2's - at £125 a corner I was not overly happy but its sorted the rumbling noise.

There is still road noise but as one of the other guys here found, Seat say that its the level of noise you expect from that sort of car.

So, you can either buy soft tires and get less noise but change them every 6-10k or buy harder compound tyres and get noise!!

Its interesting that Seat fit Bridgestones that everyone seems to say are too soft and not suited to the car!!

Quick update:
* Went in for a service on Monday
* Dealer had a look at the LEON again
* They advised that the rears we're wearing unevenly and to take it to get it laser alligned (they suggested Eden Tyre Sales)
* Just taken to ETS and the rears we're out, passenger side especially
* Dealer reckoned that after about 1000 miles, the rumble should go away as the tyres will start to wear evenly, techie at ETS wasn't so sure

* Will update in a month of so when the 1000 miles is up, fingers crossed

Here is the print out:
