Ok two things.

1) What does drilling the air box do?

2) How come buses and trucks do that when they're diesel? Thought you didn't need a dump valve on a diesel?

1. increases air into air box and makes a louder induction noise

2. its probably not a dump valve you can hear on a bus its more likely a safety valve on the air tanks for the brakes/suspension so the tanks dont blow up

Honestly mate, you wont get a load whoosh from a vag engine unless you want to go into limp mode after.
The best way is to either mod your airbox or fit an open cone filter with a Forge 007

I do, I use a GFB 50/50 and never gone into limp mode, i also use an Apexi mushroom filter.

going back to basics

That's correct on that one, depending on the weight of the truck/bus, the air tank pressure is around 12 bar (imagine that amount of boost!)

I have had one of the valves fail on me and it doesn't half go with a bang!
