a diesel will be quiker in gear the petrol will wip its ass once it gets around 130 i opened a mates eyes to how good a diesel can be last nite he drives a porche boxster s went out and by him lol should have seen his face .to me the diesel would be more "real world" performace like how often are you goin to be cruisin at 140 mph lol when i get round to going to hopefully wipe a couple of smiles off other peoples faces lol .but at the end of the day they both have there advantages and disadvatages

Oh good, a petrol vs diesel thread, not had one of these for a while...

Short answer - test drive both and see which you prefer. Completely different driving styles, both have strengths and weaknesses.

TDI all the way for me though :)

Interesting article on 5th Gear just now, the VXR Astra vs. the 888 1.9CDTi near 200bhp Diesel Astra. Overall the VXr was quicker but not by much, but (and I will get flamed for it) in the hands of a proper driver (not the oh so useless VBH) I think the VXR would have won by a greater margin.

Good show by the diesel though, apart from all the black smoke, and the taxi sound etc... ;)

yeah just too point out that the 888 was driven by a touring car driver and the other a hot upper class bird that i cant stop hearing say 'mummy, oh mummy' from a previous 5th gear

and lets not forget that it is more than just remapped...uprated suspension, uprated brakes and so on
