ken a petrol can do 500 a week too..... :cheeky:
Really? I thought they all just blew up and died by the side of the road. I wanted something economical, but now that I think of it, I have no idea why as I wasn't paying for my fuel at the time.

Deisel does give better mpg. Diesel is no slower than the equiv petrol model these days. Diesels have better residuals. Diesels can be fun. Diesel never truely feels thrashed. Diesel has huge torque......

How much does that p1ss the petrol brigade off ? Enough.

Petrol is smooth. Petrol revs. Petrol allows DV's to woosh. Petrol sounds proper. Petrol cars are cheaper for the same model. Petrol headlines a model range (eg LCR vs FR TDi). Petrol cars feel like their being thrashed........

How much does that hit back in retaliation ? Enough.

An arguement never to be won by either side I'm afraid! I switched from Petrol to TDi and then bought an old MK2 GTi so I can really thrash a motor...... only its too slow in the mid range! You cant win.

so doing over 5k rpm in a diesel never feels slightly rough?
2.0 turbo petrol will invariably out run a 2.0 tdi every time too.

How do you mean "out run"?

put the two cars side by side, be it a special stage or 2 mile straight. petrol rules.the big ol heavy derv engine will be understeering everywhere, and thats only on the straights! :D

All 2 litre turbo petrols are quicker than 2 litre tdi's? mmm Not too sure on that... im sure there are exceptions...

Once the TDi is rolling e.g. on the motorway that is when it sits down and gets its smoke on by outpulling the petrol equivelent.

by the time the tdi is rolling the petrol will be away.
were talking vag like for like cars but with derv/petrol engines, hell, even go for 1.8t 225 vs the 1.9 160! diesel has larger cc but less go.
noone will win this argument as each has its merits and pitfalls.

I dont know why everyone is so touchy. I wasnt looking for an argument, just to discuss the benfits or downsides of each one.......I will think twice next time.

When I bought the Leon a few months ago I looked at the diesel Leon, but decided I wanted the Petrol Cupra R. For a start it looked better and had a better spec (these were 2003 models), it was more powerful and as it had been revo'd as much torque as I could want for a FWD car.

Ive also got a Mondeo TD, and whilst its the Mk1 engine, it does 60MPG and its as quiet on the motorway.

The only diesel I was really close to buying instead of the Leon was a 530d.

If petrol prices continue to rise, and diesel engines get as good as a the 3 litre BM engine my next car will be diesel.

whats the point in this forum. I drive a fr tdi and love the speed and torque and the mpg. i bought a diesel because i do alot of miles so it makes more sense. however if i worked local i would deffo go for a petrol probably a honder s2000. You cant get any better that a rear wheel drive petrol. But at end of the day its personal opinion. so end it here

yeah my car might smoke at full throttle but westec had to take my car off there rollers that day because the tyres where spinning on the rollers with the torque rising so fast.To compare 0-60 mph time : ibiza pd tdi 160 = 7.6 secs : ibiza 1.8t 150 fr 8.4 secs.Diesel wins :funk: If you compare modern diesel and petrol engines with the same power i would say diesel wins because of the extra torque making them more driveable but petrol engines are better performance engines ( at the moment ) because you can get alot higher bhp from them, well that was untill BMW released the 535d sport with 272bhp and 413 lb torque as standard !

I'm not going to go on about diesels per se..but what I am going to say is this...
I have had petrols all my life and now own my first deisel after 25yrs of driving.

Do I think I made a mistake..no
Would I buy again yes...
However I also own a turbo petrol
Do I like it yes..it ironically has a smaller power band than my deisel where to match or beat the same pace it has to be kept above 5000rpm.

The real deal to me is how they drive...
I have been a driving fan for as long as I have lived and today I took my deisel onto very demanding driving roads I have driven many hooned miles in petrol cars...
How did my deisel do..
It went absolutely fantastic..:)
The limit to my pace today wasn't the engine but my chassis and I was feathering the throttle to keep the car balanced round corners..so in effect I couldn't have gone any quicker in a petrol car over those roads...

So to summarise..deisels today equal petrol cars...and you can't say fairer..

I would be interested to know M0rk wether you have actually driven say a Cupra tdi with revo....you may well be surprised..I was..pleasantly
